Sterilite tubs and other questions.

Okay so I've seen many people using sterilite tubs as homes for their corns, hatchlings and adults and I'm thinking about doing this as well. However, I noticed that those who use them often are breeding them. I don't really plan on breeding but I want a few different corn morphs as a collection and don't think I would be able to afford 20gal glass aquariums for each as they are (lid included) 79.99 at my local petstore, each. Sterilite seems like a good solution but I'm unsure if these are useable for the snakes entire lifespan or are they just being used temporarily during breeding season on the pictures I see. Can an adult (with an average size) really live happily in the appropriate sized sterilite tub or am I missing something?

Also, instead of making multiple threads I've got two other questions so I figured I'd just put them here.

I'm thinking of ordering my hatchlings from serpenco and using the 50% discount thing, however I really want to get a green/pink corn snake and I didn't see any pictures on the website. There are a lot of morphs however that do not have pictures and I'm not familiar with the proper morph names. Does anyone know if Rich offers them but just doesn't have a picture for this particular morph? If so, can anyone give me the name so if I palce the order I know which to get?

Last question, I'm thinking of buying two ghost corns from someone. They are normal ghost hatchlings and was wondering if the price was good. A male and a female for $100 plus 40 shipping. Does this sound reasonable?

Thanks.

One more question I forgot to ask, but on lots of websites I see lone females being sold for an increase. I'm not complaining, but does anyone know why this is? Is it better for a buyer who isn't breeding to buy pairs? I'm assuming it has something to do with the snakes health or something. Should I buy pairs or would it be okay to just get a few lone females, I don't mind the extra charge. Thanks.

...

Breeders sell females at a higher price to try to avoid getting stuck at the end of the season with tons of males of a particular morph.

Sorry, to answer your first question. Although you hear different explinations throughout the boards, sterilites are fine for the entire lifespan of a snake. I use the 28 qt (blanket boxes) for my adults and i've never had a problem. It makes clean up much easier as well as maintaining temperatures. The drawbacks to the sterilites is that it doesnt make for the pretty looking viv and you dont get to see your snakes as much but it's so much easier so far as care goes...........and a whole lot cheaper.

If you're buying snakes as pets only there would be no real reason to pay the extra money for females. Instead of getting pairs, you could get males of two separate morphs that you like. The sex of the snake has no real bearing on behavior. Once in a while you will get males that go off food in the Spring, with no ill-effects generally, due to their instintcts to breed.

That's true, however....

If he decides in a few years that he wants to breed, he's then got all male cornsnakes. If you buy a pair, there's no price increase. You're better off to get a pair now than get males and decide in a few years that you want to breed. Even if you don't decide you want to breed and you eventually get out of corns, you'll have a pair to sell and females fetch a higher price.

Btw, for Rich's 50% off sale, you need to spend at least $300 before shipping. It doesn't seem like you're looking to get that many snakes.

Also, Rich is scaling back on a lot of 'common' morphs. For example, I don't believe that Rich is selling ghosts this year. Most of his projects are with the newer stuff and the stuff that he's keeping secret in his hidden below ground room :).

Don at SMR sells pink and green snows (http://www.cornsnake.net/gallery.php3?id=30).

Ghosts are a 'common' morph today, and the prices are pretty low. IMO, I wouldn't spend over $35 on a ghost. So to me, $50 each is a bit high. If you're going to order from someone like Rich or Don, you might as well just get a pair of ghosts from them in the order instead of paying shipping on two different orders.

FYI, you can always call Rich and ask him specifics about what he's got---or what you want. He's usually out there (especially this time of the year) quite late. Now I'm not saying to call him at 3am, but you catch the drift. Anyway, again, to my knowledge Rich doesn't produce pink and green snows.

Hope that helps!

About how big is a 28qt Sterilite compared to a 20gal. long. Will it suit an adult (normal size adult)? And how do you heat it?

Do a search for 'rack systems'. That will answer all of your questions.

I use 41 qt Sterlite Tubs in my racks. They are 33 1/2" x 17 1/2" x 5 1/2" for my males; and I have the same thing in length and width except they are 9" high for my females. I have deeper for my females because of nesting boxes and it just gives them a little more room. These work great and there is plenty of exercise room. I had looked recently for the 9" high tubs again but couldn't find them. I'm sure they are out there somwhere though...

do the rack system search and look for Cav's thread. That's where i got the basic idea on how to build my rack. it's not hard at all. I'm in NC and the weather hot during the summer, mild fall, and only about 2 months of cold weather so it's not hard to heat. I had a helix & flexwatt combo hooked up to it, but i had an incident in the form of a roomate's cat who tore out the wires. Needless to say neither the roomate or the cat reside there anymore. So this winter i kept a space heater with a thermostat on it as back up.

So far as temps, buy one of those that records high/low temp for a 24 hour period and figure out your range. Once you have that, then adjust accordingly.
