Still snake

So my new snow was hiding in some newspaper shreddings, and i wanted to re-arrange his tank with some slate rocks and a stick i found while hiking. I took the paper out and hes just curled up with his head beneath his body, his eyes move when i get near but he has been still for hours now. I even turned out the halogen lamp i have above him (far away ofcourse, just to get him in a day/night cycle)

any suggestions/comments on this?

first, make sure the stick isnt from a cyder tree. other wise, for a baby corn, it sounds like the snake is fine. u must remember that almost always, as long as a snake is feeding, it is most likely healthy. good luck.

About the stick...

Hey there -

I'm VERY new to keeping snakes, but I've heard that you shouldn't put a branch/stick inside the tank unless it's been treated (baked, then frozen - or something like that) to get all the critters, bacteria, etc. off of it.

I bought sand-blasted grapevine from the petstore. It's relatively cheap, it looks good, and it's safe.

=)

feeding doesn't ALWAYS mean healthy oreo. Some snakes will eat no matter what.

As far as your snakes behavoir, its seems like you just have a shy snake. Younger snakes are very skittish and shy. Just about everything is a predator to them when they are that age, even you. Some will respond aggressively (rattling tail, striking, etc) and some will just try to disappear by hiding or staying still. I would guess that yours is the shy kind. The reason he hid his head is because thats the most vital piece of his body, and he didn't want that exposed. How long have you had him? Give him a period to adjust and get out of his baby stage and he'll be fine.

Amy is also correct. Before you introduce anything new into your viv especially something that you found on a walk or hike, for the safety of your snake, bake it at about 275-300 degrees frist to kill al bacteria and nasties on it. There are a few types of trees that are toxic to younger corns such as pine and cedar, so try to avoid any twigs from them

Corn snakes do not require lighting since they are active mostly during the hours of darkness. They will cycle without artificial lighting, as long as the room that they are in is near a window.

Make sure that the halogen bulb isn't creating excessive temperatures for your snake.

Ive had him for a couple days now.

The halogen is needed because hes in my closet. Im not supposed to have exotic animals in my apartment so hes hidden behind closed doors when im not home. Theres plenty of ventilation, and the temperature inside the tank is 82 right under the infra-red lamp, so i assume its around 75 ambient.

The stick i got seemed pretty dead, like it has no moisture in it at all, but if you think i should bake it, then id rather be safe than sorry.

I don't know if this helps or not, but I soak all the wood (and I use a lot of driftwood, which is rather dead-looking) I have in the viv in a 10% bleach solution and then dry it in the oven for 10 or 15 minutes at 200-250 degrees. It seems to work well for me at least. :)

I would take Katie's advice and treat that wood before introducing it...just because it is dead doesn't mean that it won't introduce parasites or bacteria to your snake.

If you bleach it...be sure to rinse well and dry completely before using it...
And I wouldn't bake it hotter than 200-250...and WATCH it...
Don't need to start the house on fire.
