Stink?? Corn snakes vs Grey Banded King Snakes

I know this is a "Corn Snake" site but I'm sure there are those here that love other colubrids. Personally I am a corn snake/grey banded freak. Most other types of snake don't do a whole lot for me.

Anyway, I have bred and kept corns and greybands for quite a few years and have noticed that the stink from defecation of healthy corn snakes in general is much worse than the defecation of Grey banded King snakes. In fact, My tubs and tanks that hold grey banded kingsnakes hardly smell at all, even after immediate defecation!

Kind of a sick, odd topic...please feel free to respond if you have an opinion or even just a guess?

I can't even smell snake poop unless they do it right on me (fresh in other words). I mean I'd guess I could if I held the dried clump up to my nose but I'm not about to do that. What substrate are you using? Also hi from AZ :)

Hey there my Fellow Arizonan!!

Part of my problem is that I have like 30 terrariums set up on stands in a room and then maybe 20 tubs that have a thermostat set-up. I use aspen mulch from Pet-co which is probably not very cost efficient. It is hard to keep with with their crapping, especially the day after they feed!

That's a lot of snakes! Maybe swithc them to paper towels if it's hard to keep up? That'd be more economic too. You can buy a ton of aspen for cheap at animal feed stores and such. Feedlots is good, I've heard.

That is good advice! Next time, I will buy the aspen at an animal feed store. I just can't do the paper towel or newspaper thing.

That is odd. I haven't noticed any difference odor wise. I have two kings myself (cal. king and mex. mex. king). It all smells pretty offensive to me. You feed your king's rodents correct?

I've had many Cal kings in the past and they have just as offensive of a stench as corns. But I've noticed that my greybanded kingsnakes do not omit any nasty stench and they are in terrariums. I feed them the same dethawed mice I feed my corns. I may be wrong, I just wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this?

I have cali kings, corns, a rosy and a dummerils....poop is poop with them. It's all foul, but nothing that I actually notice when I walk into their room or open their cages. You must have a superior olfactory sense! ;)

Send me one of your greybands so that I can see if I notice a difference. Been wanted one for sometime now. lol.

I've never really noticed a difference. The only snakes that have an actual smell to me (not poo, just in general) are my subocs. But it's not a bad smell. It's actually kinda interesting and hard to describe.

Yeah, for me, Wandering garter snakes smell pretty putrid in general. Have you guys noticed that pungent odor corn snakes emit when scared or being aggressive? It doesn't happen very often, but a couple of really aggressive snakes have emitted a really strong odor when they get mad. I thought it was just this snake at first but then another corn got mad and emitted the same stench.

That's called Musk. Our own Roy Munson claims to be a bit of an expert. If you ever hand him a snake, the first thing he'll do is smell it's vent.
