Storing Feeders

i just got my shipment of 100 frozen pinkies, and i was wondering if storing them in a regular freezer would keep them fresh.. or how long they will stay fresh anyway. i don't want to be wasting good product !

They should be fine in a regular freezer. Just keep them in a ziplock type bag, & try to get as much air out of the bag before you seal it.
They generally are good for about 6 months. Like regular meat in the freezer.

I bought one of those ziploc freezer sealer didily pop thingys. You know the one that comes with the plunger to suck the air out. Then I break up my food into a few months at a time that way when I open the bag every week I am only exposing a couple months of food and not all of them. That way hopefully they last longer.

DYK i'm just finishing up the mice i bought a year ago. A few got a little freezer burnt, but no one seems to mind.

I do the expensive thing...
I buy enough for 2-3 months to ensure it stays fresh every time- but then again, I'm not running at full capacity...

I'd break them into smaller lots of 20-25 or whatever, and vacuum seal those groups. The one you buy in the grocery store works great for me. Then I would store the bags in a tupperware type container in the freezer.

I have a few dozen pinkies and a few dozen med. rats vacuum sealed into bricks, and labeled in huge letters "DO NOT EAT". Because...ya never know.

Okay,
so what isle at wal-mart can you find the vacuum sealed Ziploc? Is it right there with the normal ones, and I just never had to look for them?

Thank You,
Hilly

Where do you order your frozen mice from? Just finished 100 count bag from Rodent Pro, they seemed fine and stayed good in my freezer. Wondering if there is a better source for quaity and price.

A little off topic, but it pertains to storing frozen mice in the freezer. I swear my ice has started to taste funny since storing frozen mice in the freezer. It's grossed me out so thoroughly that I've stopped using ice and instead refrigerate my tap water.

Am I being paranoid or has anyone else noticed this?

Cassie16: I think your being paranoid. If your bagging and storing the mice correctly then there should be no weird taste, because no Oder or smell can get to any other frozen items. No contamination can happen..

I have had this happen to me.. I use to work at a pet shop, like three years ago, they kept canned drinks in the same fridge as the feeder worms. I also got so paranoid..that I though canned drinks tasted weird...

If it really bothers you, you could buy a smaller fridge/freezer to store them in.

There is always a chance I could be wrong...

That's the thing. I don't do any fancy bagging since I only have one corn snake that's still growing. I buy six frozen mice at a time and just throw them in the freezer in their original container (box with individual baggies around each mouse).

The ice tastes...musky. lol.

Maybe you could throw the box of mice in a tupperware container and then put it in the freezer. I don't see how it could contaminate the ice then. Thankfully, we have a second freezer down in the basement, so I don't have to deal with mousey ice cubes. ;)
