Strange behaviour

I have a 5 ft long corn snake. Just got him about 3 weeks ago, had a mite problem but I think it has been taken care of. He has not eaten since I have had him, and have tried 3 times.

Tonight I was observing him in his viv, and he was turning in a circle with part of his head and upper body on top of his back end, and he was jerking as he turned in circles...any idea what he is doing and is this normal behaviour...simply curious. Any thoughts???

His tank is 39X19X19. and for now I am using a 150 Watt Sun Glo neodymium Basking spot lamp, and a 100 watt Heat Glo Infrared Heat lamp for night. The temparature is about 78-84 by day and 74-76 by night, in the warm area of the tank. The cooler area is usually around the 76 by day and around 74 at night.

The warm end needs to be in the mid-80s, so heating's an issue. However, I don't think it's related to what you're seeing.

Just sounds like he's in the mood for lurve, to me. The jerking motion is what he'd do if he met a lady. Err... I leave you to draw your own conclusions about what he might be up to!

Thanks Bitsy,

I too think after reading in the behaviour section that he is looking for a mate. he seems very healthy, very active and a bit skiddish, or twitchy which is condusive to looking for a mate. he is diffinately a male as he was previously probed., the heated area is in the mid 80's so heat does not seem to be an issue anymore...or at least lets hope not.

wish I knew how to place a pic on here so everyone could see my viv set up....again thank you, happy to have found this site as you all are very informative and it shows with all the info and help I am getting...cheers :)

Last year I noticed my female adult snake started doing that. Turned out she was trying to shed! I was freaked out at first until I noticed the skin started coming up at her nose.

Thanks for the info, but mine is supposebly a male and he just shed completely last Monday. Cheers

I think it means your snake is going to go blind. If he had hands he would have hair on his palms.

LMAO....thanks Wade for the humour! Cheers. Well he still did not eat after trying various things, i am now going on a feeding strike for two weeks and see what happens, if he does not eat then, I have been suggested to try a live feed, or at very least stunned! And yes he will be supervised! Cheers and thanks.

It is not at all uncommon for male snakes to go off their feed for a month or two during breeding season. Don't push it or worry if he refuses.

LOL

He wants to breed and is not interested in eating, dont waste your time and money trying to feed him, wait till he starts acting normal again.
