Strange feeding behaviour

Jicin

Corn love
Over here where i live food animals are really hard to get by. Last friday i went to the only suplierer remotely in my aera. Unfortunately except for 2 pinkies he was freshed out. Great. Since my snakes are up and about the day after feeding i decided 1 wasn't enough anymore. He had 3 other mice. A bit bigger and already furry. I decided it was my only option and i could always cut them in half.

I first tried to feed my bloodred. He has been in blue fase for a couple of days (?) now. But since it was late and i didn't want to feed one of them i decided to just give it a try. She didn't eat the mouse. I cut it in half and still she didn't want it. So i gave her the 1-day pinkie and she ate that.

Then i tried to fed the other one. Just the head since she;s a bit smaller. She started to act very wierd after swallowing it. Really jerking with her body and stuff. It scared me. But when it her stomache it didn't seem to be to big are she calmed down to. I fed her the other pinkie.

Somehow it really fattened her up. About twice her size. Then suddenly i found her rolled up in the other side of the viv. I tuned of the heating since she usually does that when it's to hot. It was just 27 degrees though.

So in short i'm worried. Considering with the jerking i wonder if perhaps she was in pain. Like a bone splinter or something scary. My guess what the pinkie was a few days old. Still it might be the bones are still rather soft but hey, it IS your intestines. I imagine it doesn't need to be hard to wound internally.

Perhaps i'm just overreacting but i can't let it go. Can anyone shed light?

Jicin,

I don't know if I can really help you here, but let me ask you...did she drink any water after consuming her meal? Maybe for some reason or another it just didn't go down right...I'd really keep an eye on her just to be sure that everything works its way out alright.

No she didn't. Sometimes she drinks but not always.
I've left her completely alone to avoid any sort of stress. I didn't find a regurg. I guess i'll just have to wait and see.

Let us know how it goes Jicin. I'd hate to hear about anything happening to your kids!

I just checked her up. She's still fat but not as much anymore. She didn't like to be handeld so i put her down again. She's in her familliar brance again watching me. She's such good company. She does seems to get to big for the branch though. I'll buy her a bigger one. I really could have made a cute picture of her of only her head poking out the branch (It's completely hollow) but i was out of batteries :/

She appears to be just find thank god. I'll not be completely reassured till the bulge is completely gone though. Thanks everyone.

She just pooded. It looks a bit watery. Not exacty fluid but not dry either. The pee is yellow instead of white :/ I've turned the light back on in the viv since i found her really cold.
Also, there was a little bug in the viv. Just a tiny bug but but bigger then a mite. It had legs. I hope it's just a bug and not a parasite. I'm sure it wasn't a tick either.

After she pooed was she still a bit bulgy? I'd keep her viv nice and warm (as you did by turning on the light) to help aid her digestion. She has a UTH, right? I would recommend taking her to a rep vet if that bulge stays in there much longer. Hopefully she'll defecate again and all will be well!

Ewww...a buggy! How big was it? What kind of substrate do you use? Maybe something just managed to get in viv. I smushed a little gnat in the viv a few weeks ago (I hate bugs anyway! Well, not all, but most in general!).

Just continue to keep an eye on her and to keep us updated on how she's doing. Best wishes go out to her, Jicin!

Well she did have meal larger then usual. I can imagine it taking a bit longer then usual to digest.

The bug was tiny. I think it was just a normal bug attracked to the warmth. I'll clean the viv out this weekend and disinfect the bunch just be sure. I'm using woodchips right now but i'll switch to something more suitable for reptiles as soon as i'm able.

I'll keep you updated.

Well, she's perfectly fine. Yesterday i even had the honor of her crawling onto my hand :)

I just fed her a regular 2 day pinkie. She constricted it. You could see she's new at that since she did a horrible job at it :D Better then my red stripe though. She hasn't grasped the fact she's a constrictor yet. She things she's a 'grab the mice and hold on untill it tires' type of snake.

Why would you cut a mouse in bits, wouldnt broken bones be a factor while swallowing a chunck. If the pc went down the wrong way it could puncher the wall of the throut causing internal bleeding. If never herd of cutting up a mouse to feed a snake, but to each their own. Im glad your snake if fine now.

Why would bones be an issue? Jicin stated that the mouse (compared to a pinkie) was only "A bit bigger and already furry." Bones aren't developed in mice that small.

Well, unless i'm 100% sure i CAN cut a mouse in half safely i'll never do it again. Thanks everyone

As long as the mouse is uncooked, the bones will be relatively soft. Technically, you could feed a chicken to a dog if you left it uncooked. Cooking is what makes the bones brittle and shatter.

hiya MegF :wavey:

are you sure about the fresh bones being soft.........I know well cooked (as in stewed) chicken bones are really soft and crumbly.
I was always told chicken bones were the worst ones to feed raw.

thank you

Meg is right, you could technically feed chicken bones to a dog if they are uncooked. But once you cook them the bones become very brittle. Although they break easily they also tend to break into sharp splinters and thats why they become dangerous. I doubt I would feed my dog raw chicken bones anyway, but just cuz I'd be worried about salmonella, not the bones themselves. Anyhow I don't think the uncooked mousie bones would pose much of a problem to a snake. :)

Thanks Moonshadow. You answered for me! :) I wouldn't feed raw chicken to my dogs either, but it doesn't mean you couldn't. If mouse bones were a really serious problem, there would be a lot less snakes in the world! Anyway, we're talking pinkies originally, and they have very little solid bone. Mostly cartilage and softer bone like a child.

Jicin,
Just glad to hear everything is ok with your snake! What a relief that must be to you!
