Also known as land hermit crabs. Saw them at the pet store for the first time and they were fascinating and only $10. 4 or 5 of them probably as big as a tennis ball with shell and very active. picture link Didn't want to steal their photo so here's a link. Would've bought on the spot if I knew anything about hermit crabs. Just did a little research and it turns out hermit crabs can't be bred in captivity. :(

I have a couple of hermit crabs, and they are hilarious...they climb, roll, knock each other over and play. They are dead easy to care for as long as you can control the humidity, and can be patient while they are shedding and leave them alone.
One word of caution about byuying them - check them over for mites, and make sure that they are healthy and active - a good thing to check is their anntenae - rigid and active - it's good and healthy - limp and innactive - not healthy.
Good luck!

I looked into getting them for a while and someone gave me a bunch of links...strawberries were my faves too...I got almost all the supplies and was waiting for younger ones with no broken claws to come in and they didn't so just took all the supplies back...I was told it's better to get smaller ones with natural shell...sometimes they are treated cruely to get them into the decorated shells and are stressed...though would have in the future given them the option of choosing decorated ones

here are crab and shell links

thanks for the links. These were pretty big compared to all the other hermit crabs I've ever seen and seemed pretty healthy. Their shells were rather plain looking - don't really care for the painted shells anyway. They have such interesting eyes too. If I breakdown and get them I'll be sure to post pics.

I love Hermits, me and my mum have had them for about 5 years now, alot of times though they wouldent go through successful molts, and i can tell you, some people are down right idiots, they say make sure the cage is always dry blah blah blah, well in the last year our hermit crabs just soak their cage and make their sand wet, and against what everyone says make sure cage is dry, our crabs are much more active, and we have succecsful molts, oh and btw humidity was fine, they just didnt have succesful molts, but i think its funny how everywhere we looked and read said keep it dry, and the crabs them self make it wet and are much more healthier and active :)

I had hermit crabs when I was about 8 years old. They were so inactive that, when they died, I didn't realize it until they started to smell bad (or worse than they did when they were alive anyway). That's one type of animal I will never venture into caring for again...lol

i have 7 hermit crabs (used to have 13)and they are really easy to care for all the links sircat poasted are great sites i am a member of landhermitcrabs.com and hermitcrabassociation.com and all the people there are very nice

and also i have 2 strawberry hermitcrabs and they are wonderfull to look at cuz there just soo bright!but if you are going to get crabs i would suggest you get the caribean crabs first cuz the strawberry crabs are a bit harder to care for so you should start out with an easier kind

The colors were stunning - kind of like the first time I saw an Okeetee. Don't have an idea what kind of hermit crabs they normally carry. This is the first time I've seen strawberries anywhere.

After reading some forums maybe a different species would be a better starting point.

Yes, if you're going to start with hermit crabs, start with Purple Pinchers. Strawberries require more humidity and a saltwater pool. They are much more delicate and destroy more of your viv than the purple pinchers. An "advanced" hermit crab so to speak. LOL

yeah its really annoying somtimes when you wake up and see the salt and fresh water bowls upside down and see a straw trying to flip the food bowl over i just dont know why they do it!its really annoying

and yeah you should deffinatly start with purple pinchers cuz those are the easiest to care for

Was that crab old enough to drink???? That whole keg by himself looks to be too much.
