Strength of snakes? Escapee!!!

Hi all,

I was wondering how strong corn snakes are?!

It might seem like an odd question, but we just found Salvador on the landing (one flight of stairs down from this floor but luckily unharmed) and were terrified, how could she have gotten out?

We inspected the cage and the sliding glass doors on the front were intact and definitely locked shut, they couldn't even move a little bit let alone to let her out. But the lid was slightly up in one corner, which I think is where she's escaped from. However, we know we put the lid on properly because I check it at least twice a day (I'm really over paranoid about our snake :( ) and also we have a stack of about thin 20 magazines lying across it so that it's weighted down. We've looked all around the tank and can't find any holes in the sealant or anything. I've put her back and put 5 more books on the top and taped up the lid as we usually use the sliding doors at the front anyway.

She's only 2 foot long and the height of the tank is about 1 foot- is she strong enough to do this herself or has even my constant checking failed?! I feel so rubbish about finding her, I really worry that something bad could have happened to her because I didn't make her tank escape proof enough :(

Please let me know what I can do to stop this happening again, I really want to do the best I can for little Salvador and letting her run around the house is not the best!

Hello

I had a viv with the front sliding doors on and Elwood always escaped. i worked out in the end he wasn't pushing the doors open he was flattening his body in between the door an the viv. The only way i stopped it was to take the viv back and get the store to swap it for a top opening one. I know this isn't a great help to you but it the only way i got round the problem. Good luck.

Oh I see! Yep there is a little gap there, I didn't think she could get through it though. It still doesn't explain the lid being a little open but I will take any precautions possible- we're buying her a new viv in the next week or two anyway (a bigger one) so we'll make sure we get a top opening one.

Thank You for the advice :)

The rule is generally if their head can fit into a gap the rest of their body can fit. They are very stretchy little critters. Glad you found yours, keep that little one safe and secure, they don't know that the best place for them is in their viv.

Stretchy like gummy worms (and almost nowhere near as tasty). Lol. I'm glad you found her instead of the empty tank. It's nice having it that way once in a while.
