Stressed to be caught?

Tinkerbeller87

Happily a cornsnake lover
I have tried searching the posts and haven't found the answer to my question...

I have had my first snow corn since Sept. of 09. She is now about 7 months old. I don't have a problem getting her out of her hide to handle her. And she seems content just chillin in my hands. Doesn't try to get away or take off.

When she is out and about around her viv though she is impossible to catch! She literally takes off when I try to grab her. If i try about three times she will then start rattling her tail, haven't heard her hiss yet. I'm not scared of being bitten I'm just worried about her getting stressed.

I've come on here before for feeding problems and you all were such a big help which was greatly appreciated! So if you have some suggestions about how to not stress her out that would be great! Thanks

I'm completely new to snakes but maybe if you just hold your hand still in the viv and let her check it out she may not get stressed out

7 months is still extremely young. My snake is about 9 months old now, and in the past couple of months she has settled down a LOT. I would not be worried about stressing her by picking her up. Daily, gentle handling is good.

My snake use to do that a lot. Now he still sort of gets scared when i reach for him, but when i hold him for a while he stays in my hand and watches tv with me ..haha. He also likes to hang out in my shirt pocket. Its just a matter of him getting use to you. You have to hold him on a regular basis (exept for when he eats) for short periods of time and he will gradually get closer to you.

Nah, the best way to pick up a corn that's nervous about being picked up is to scoop it up quickly and with confidence before it even realizes you've moved the hide. Remember that they are territorial and their viv is, in their mind, their territory. The faster you get them out of their territory the faster they'll become calm.
