"Striped Kisatchie" Project - Pleasant Surprise!

A couple of years ago we imported some Kisatchies from SMR, and 3 years ago I decided to experiment a bit with them. I really liked the idea of getting out some striped kisatchie :bird: So here are F2 breeding results (so far):

Not sure exactly what to call them though?? :uhoh:

TWINS!!!

And this morning I noticed twins pipping! Unfortunately I had to rush off to work, so I don't know if it is a TWO HEADED hatchling, or Twins. A few years ago I hatched a 2 headed Kisatchie from their grand parents. I can't be sure, but I have a feeling that the twins might be striped (from the brief glimse that I got this morning).

UNidentical Twins!

It turns out the twins are NOT identical. The larger “twin” is a normal patterned Kisatchie and the smaller “twin” is striped, lol! Not sure what they are referred to … “Unidentical twins”?

Here are some pics of the twins.

Nice project !!

I especially like the looks/coloration of the Amel Striped !!
Congrats on the "twins" as well. I would have never thought you could get two different patterns from one egg :shrugs:.....pretty cool !!

I have two cross projects in the works myself using Kisatchie X Corn morphs.

Nice project, congratulations!
As for the twins, there are identicals (monozygotic) or fraternals (dizygotic). They are just sharing a shell the way mammals share a uterus. The fraternals are far more common. Check the sexes too. All the twin reptiles I have hatched have been the same sex so far but I have had two different morphs in one egg. I've only had one set of identical which were also cojoined.
Please do a progression on these guys if you decide to keep them.

Terri

Thanks Walter and Teri.

I've since learnt a bit more about the "twin" situation in snakes: Of all the corns sharing eggs, only about one in a thousand is identical. In the shelling process in the oviduct, if two embryos are too close to each other, they are shelled together. Most of the identical twins in snakes are rendered as bi-cephaloids (twin-headed). Therefore, the odds of identical twins is easily as rare as it is in humans. Fraternal twinning in humans is very common, but the early cell-splitting in embryogenesis resulting in separated twins is one in many million.

Good to learn new things! :)

Wow- cool!!! What did you do to get stripe into the project? LOVE the twins! And the amel...

Lovely babies, congrats! The twins are really cool, I didn't know that could happen!

Thank you everyone. I used a striped butter, as I was keen to see what the amel version looks like as well. Obviously the caramel influence is clearly noticeable in most of the offspring, but there are one are two that look more like Kisatchies.

I'm not one for deliberately making hybrids, but this is one that I made an exception for - and I'm not sorry :)

Here are some pics of some of the others that hatched from the clutch.

Walter, may I ask which corn morphs you are using for your Kisatchie X Corn project? Or is that a secret for now? :)

Na, no secret.

Ow Wow!!! Walter, those are some awesome Kisatchie projects you'v got going there!!! Thank you for sharing :)

Thanks. Here are some pics. of the F2 visuals from both projects.

The bad thing about one of these projects is that the Sunkissed used was proven to carry the Gazer gene, so I've had to cull most of the project so far.
The male and female Sunkissed CornSatchies (this is my labeling for the Corn / Kistachie cross) are the only ones I have and they both need to be tested as well.
I'm keeping fingers crossed that these two prove to be gazer free so I can move forward with the project.

If a female produces twins it is likely she will again and her daughters may as well. It is all up to the female on how the eggs come out just like it is the males who are responsible for the sex of the babies.

That could be an interesting project, seeing if a female produces more than one set of twins in her lifetime and if her female offspring follow suit.
