Struggling to digest fuzzies? Multiple Regure Issues.

lyndy299

Do what with the who now?
My '08 Miami girl has been puzzling me for months now. She has had regurges on three seperate (not consecutive) occasions. She weighs in at 38g so should be able to take a small fuzzy without problems. However, I have tried moving her up on three seperate occasions (with plenty of time inbetween), with the same results. She takes the first and digests without a problem but always regurges the second, which obviously results in her going back down to pinkies. I take these regurges very seriously (her's are the first I've experienced in my personal collection) and am worried about her progress. I really do not want her to regurge again. I was hoping someone would be able to help me out with this.

Thanks in advance.

Was she ok on double pinks? I guess I would stop trying to offer fuzzies until she is significantly bigger, like another 10 or 20 grams. Three regurges is a pretty strong sign that things aren't going ok with fuzzies. What is your feeding interval? Do you slit the mice? I guess if it was me, I'd feed one and a half or double pinks for a while, till she gains weight, then try something like two thirds of a fuzzy, in two pieces, for a few feedings, and then maybe move to a whole small fuzzy cut in three pieces. I'd also be putting Nutribac (if you can get it there) on all meals for months.

Hi Nanci, thanks for the quick reply,
She's been fine on double pinks, showing hardly any lump at all and digesting them fine. So I should keep her on double pinks until she's around the 50-60g mark?
I've been feeding every 6-8 days when trying the fuzzies but she was previously on a double pinks every 5 days schedule. The fuzzy was slit on last attempts. I have Nutribal (for my leopard gecko's) Is that the same thing? Would avipro also be beneficial?

Is the Nutribal probiotics?

I might let her put on say ten grams on double pinks, and then try 2/3 of a fuzzy, in two pieces.

No, its a vitamin supplement...now I've had a look. I do have avipro which is a soluble prebiotic (with vitamins). I did put this in her water after feeding (the meal that was later regurged) which she drank as I was putting her back in her tub. Should I use this on her meals instead for the next few months? Do you think there is a reason for her problems or perhaps its 'just one of those things'?

Thanks again.

I would wait 10 days to feed anything at all to let her build up her digestive enzymes again. Were you feeding double fuzzies or just one? For the next feeding try just one pinkie or even a half of pinkie to keep things light. If she holds this down slowly increase her feedings by a half everytime until you are back up to double pinks and keep it like that for awhile. Maybe try peach fuzzies at the end of summer after a few month of solid smaller meals, but it sounds like she is growing well so maybe she prefers smaller meals:)

Its not the post-regurge procedure that is the problem, thanks for they reply anyway. It's the long term issue that appears to be present.

At that size I wouldn't call it a long term issue yet. This corn is smaller than 40 grams so the fact it isn't taking fuzzies successfully isn't surprising. I have seen a lot of variation in fuzzy size which could be the problem, and a lot of snakes need extra weight on them before taking a bigger size meal. The munson plan is a good guideline, but not all snakes are the same. You can also cut the fuzzies in half and serve it this way to see if your snake digests this easier.

Again, thanks. But I do understand the variation in size etc etc. I merely ask because this is not a problem I have encountered before, having dealt with many corns. Unfortunately I do see this as a semi-long term issue, for the moment anyway as it has been detrimental to her growth and weight gain. I have everything under control, however, having never supplemented meals with probiotics, I just need to know if avipro will indeed be suitable.
