Substrate Alternatives

Hi there I was just wondering what other type of substrate alternatives there are besides aspen bedding because it seems to really give my asthma problems when Im over the cage. Thanks for the help.

I've been using a chopped barley straw bedding that's dust extracted. It's a european product called 'russell bedding', but I'm sure you could find something similar to try

You sure it is Ashtma and now a RI?

Not sure what you mean, but I know when I am cleaning her cage I cough hard so Im sure. Im going to go look around today and see what I can find. I might even pick up another corn...for the wife.

I've used Eco Earth with mine before. I like it because it looks like real dirt.

Cant go wrong with newspaper or kicthen towel, cheap, easy to clean, allows feeding inside the tub/tank and is generally sooo much less hastle.

Instead of kitchen towels, do you think an old t-shirt would work??

I am only asking because I have a bunch that are on the verge of being too faded to wear. I hate to just throw them out, and I've already got a bunch of dust rags.... :shrugs:

You might get a better response if you started your own thread instead of hijacking someone elses.

Rocky, if you want to continue using aspen, maybe you could find some of those pollen masks to wear when you have to get into the tank for whatever reason. When I was in college, I had to wear them every time they cut the grass, and they did seem to help.

The amount of dust in the aspen varies from brand to brand, I find.
