I am currently using aspen snake bedding at the time, I love this stuff, I've been using it for almost a year now, it usually doesn't bother my allergies because I kept the windows open until now, since its so cold out. Now, the odor is starting to hit me, and I feel miserable. :nope:

Is there an alternative to aspen? I know i get sick from any type of wood/dirt or sand product. I used to use carefresh pet bedding with my ferrets, and that never bothered me....now, is this good for snakes? What about cage carpets, or is it not worth the hassle?

Thank You.

Lots of people use Carefresh. I used to use carpet, what a PITA! Hard to clean and the snakes loved burrowing under it, making them hard to get out.

Hmm, I don't notice the odor bothering me -- in fact, I don't really notice an odor at all (does your bedding need to be changed, perhaps?) -- but I do notice that when I rake through the aspen, the dust will drive my allergies nutz. So, I wear a hospital mask and that does help. I also firmly believe in the powers of Zyrtec. :)

(Just to justify: I have wicked allergies, as well -- the only thing that I didn't test moderately to severely allergic to is cockroach feces. How bizarre is that?! Otherwise, per my allergist, I'm "a mess," so I do feel your pain!)

I used to use carefresh- I like it for the big snakes but with the smaller ones, I found that they tend to burrow more than they do with Aspen and get right up to the glass bottom of the tank...

But as Nanci stated, carefresh is perfectly find for your snake and many many people use it.

I love Zyrtec more than snakes love aspen!!

Unfortunately Zrytec doesn't work for me, now that it is OTC as they dropped the strength of it, so I'm forced to use Xyzal (a lot better than Zrytec, I think) and a spoonful of local honey, every day. :)

I think, I'll just switch them all to shredded paper on Wednesday.

I never noticed! It used to be 20mg, and now it's 10, right??? Oh well, I'm doing all right on 10. I liked it way better when it was prescription- my insurance paid for it better.

Actually, I just read the bottle. It says it's 10mg, but a 5mg product may be better for less severe symptoms. I can't remember what I used to take. I have to ask the pharmacist. But 10mg is working fine. And I would DIE without it.

There are 3 strengths of regular Zyrtec, and I was all along on the 10 mg, so the switch was ok for me. I still have to have a Rx for my Zyrtec-D...I haven't tried Xyzal yet, but I may just wait on trying anything new until after the baby, so we'll see! :) I'm always open to trying something new!
