Substrate and Poop Qs

So I have always used Eco Earth brick stuff for my snakes which is VERY much like earth and excellent for Circe to network tunnels in. The thing is, it’s brown and I can never ever find her poop in it. I can never smell it either, and it’s not in the water. Does this stuff have some special way of neutralizing it or whatever? Also.. She seems to like it when the ground is slightly on the damp side (she will hang out in the dampness under the water bowl until I redampen the rest) Is it being damp bad for her?

Nope, the poop is still there, you just can't see it. Though the idea of a substrate removing poop for you sounds like every herp owner's dream.

The question of moisture depends if the substrate is or will eventually get moldy.

Bio-active substrate can do that (to a certain extent) especailly for smaller snakes- like younger corns!

If your corn is pooping under the substrate and the poop is really small, it can dry out then break up when the substrate is moved. You'll never find it, if that's the case (change substrate often -monthly?- to prevent bacteria growth if this is happening).

I use the same stuff and one time I got distracted when I was scooping and that's exactly what happened. Think of a ball of kitty pee in scoopable litter when it breaks.

If this is a real problem and you simply never EVER see the poop, you should make sure she's pooping at all. Remove the substrate and put down paper towels for at least 2 weeks. It's possible that it's just getting lost in the substrate, but if she's not pooping at all, you've got bigger problems to worry about (probably not the case, but best to rule it out).

oh no no. i KNOW she is pooping for a fact. i just think it breaks up. But i only really change the substrate once a year or so... I guess i am used to substrate showing some signs of being dirty and this stuff just doesn't.
