Sugar Glider in My Alley

solo1979

Lovin' me some snakes!
Feeling bad because I just spotted a sugar glider in my alley but couldn't catch it to help it. It was sitting in the middle of the alley very confused and let my dogs get way too close before attempting to run. It ran up a drain pipe so I took the dogs inside and came back out to see if I could catch it. The drain pipe moved when I reached my hand up and it got scared and jumped into a tree in a neighbor's yard. The guy that lives there is a jerk so I wasn't going to take my chances going into his fenced yard. Clearly we do not have wild sugar gliders in Chicago and it seemed pretty comfortable with people so this is/was someone's pet. I really hope it's ok out there with all the other animals we have around. :(

I know. The look on his face was pure fear and my dogs only made it worse. I'll check for him again tonight but I doubt he'd stay in the same area.

Put out a live trap up high, where cats are less likely to get in it. Use something that a sugar glider would think is tasty. Hopefully you can catch it soon and not squirrels.

You probably know better than I, but are you sure it wasn't a Flying Squirrel? I've only seen a couple of them around here, but they look considerably like a Sugar Glider, IMO. They have those same huge, watery eyes, and similar shape and color.

You could be right that it's a Sugar Glider... just curious?...

I just googled and they do look similar, although it had the facial stripes of a glider. Didn't do a very good job of gliding or flying from that drain pipe to the tree. It also seemed to have a bit of trouble getting up the drain pipe which makes me think it's a house pet and not accustomed to climbing much. I'm not sure we have flying squirrels in IL either, but if we did, that sure would put my mind at ease. I've been thinking about that poor little guy all day and what I should have done differently to catch him.
