Super sneaky snake rack

Hey,

Im in university accomodation as of september this year, so the plan is to create a super sneaky snake rack to disguise those slithery critters in case i have an inspection...

Firstly if the snakes are found, I will simply just have to re-locate them to my girlfriends house, so its not a risk to their well-being, i just dont want to part from them.

My idea is a book case/book storage unit.

I was thinking of using tubs from the 'really useful box' company, and having a rack 4 tubs high, which could be placed next to my desk. The trouble im having is the snakes lighting... How well do corns cope without natural/synthetic light? at the moment they have a nice naturally lit partitioned viv that they share, but being sneaky would mean 4 solid walls.

How can I go about getting light into the enclosures without exposing them to anyone.

Possibilites ive thought of:

Placing the rack facing the window to catch some of the day time glow

Routing out a groove in the top of each 'roof' and putting in a small low wattage bulb- this would mean i could not fully remove the tub from the shelf. Any one got any ideas? or a plan even...

I'd be more concerned with were you'll store the mice.....
They'll probably look through your fridge incase you have any prohibited drink or foods lol
Maybe you could buy a micro freezer or something lol.
Corn snakes usually don't need special lights but I think they do require a day/night cycle.
So I'm not sure but you might be able to plug in a small lamp inside the secret rack when your not there .
As for building the rack could maybe be built into a piece of furniture so for example you build it into an armchair you remove the back of the arm chair and build in the rack (leaving space to place a lighting unit) and then reattach the back leaving a small hole on the edge for wires. Also be sure to leave some way to be able to remove the back easily.

But to be honest I wouldn't do it if I were you....

yeah its a lot of hassle, but I find it a fun project.. I cant live off campus because im already signed into a contract :/ but i think I should be fine, I had several smelly hamsters there last year (ive moved off campus for my second year), and they never got found!

Cheers for the input, great idea about the chair :)

By the way what will people think of you going out to a pet shop every now and then and bringing back some ``pet food`` lol
Also what about defrosting the mice?

Aha thats not a problem, i live with 6 of my best friends, I've lived with them for 2 years now... The issue is that on campus accomodation we arent allowed any kind of pet, and we have a cleaner who comes and cleans the kitchen floor and toilets every morning. I guess what im trying to do is create a way of hiding the snakes if ever we have a 'room inspection' which happens once a term... They have to give us 24 hours notice before they come into our rooms, but I'd like not to have to hide several vivs in the ceiling or something :)

well I sounds simple enough :)
As long as you provide them with enough space and take care of them it doesn't really matter where you put them :) maybe whenever someone is coming in take the snake out of the viv and put it in a pillow case and tell them your just minding the viv for a friend lol
(just be careful wouldn't want the cleaners putting the pillowcase in the wash lol)

TV Storage unit...you know the one for the oldffashioned TV's and a wooden door underneath... piece of glass in front of the gap and bob's your uncle.

(basically find the MDF build your own instructions..and all you do is fit the glass doors

helll

Why not
get yourself a huge PC tower... they do transparent sides for those...replace one side...
Rip out the rest (keep cables in their sockets) and when inspection knocks you put the transparent side up to the wall
You will have the only Pc you realy plug a mouse into

The very first corn I knew belonged to a friend when we were living in the dorms in college. We were both Resident Assistants too, in charge of our floors! Lol! At any given time, I'd have one or two of my rabbits and/or an iguana or beardie in my room so really it's not difficult. I use to go with my friend to the petstore to pick up crickets for my beardie or pinks for his corn and nobody ever questioned the little brown baggies.

I wouldn't add lights to any enclosure as that would just draw attention. A bookcase could work. I'm actually in the process of attempting my first vivs and I'm literally just jazzing up a Walmart bookcase to make it a little prettier and adding sliding plexi to the front. Ventilation in the back via pegboard. Throe a couple of books and some papers on top to set a messy room mood and the cleaning crew should be none the wiser.

I will add this though. Anytime I knew for sure I'd have people inspecting my room, my pets would go visit a friend off campus for the day.

Make sure you water/soilage proof the sidings.
And a couple of extra nails in the back to keep the board in place probably wont hurt either.

A bookcase you could jazz up by access and vent through a shelf and non sliding plexi or glass in the front (glass is actually cheaper).
Just lift the shelf above and ...

(cost for my custom viv, solid pine wood) 32 gallons.... 50 euro) 80 including gadgets
Could have gone way cheaper if
1) the local dit stores saw machine would actually cut straight. (windows would not fit as the plyboard would be 4 mm off over the full width and you can sand that stuff)
2) the local supermarked had done their offer on a hanging bookshelf/case a bit sooner (= before i started building and shopping around for 2 weeeks)
