Switching from live to f/t

Long time reader, first time poster. First let me say this is a great forum you have going here, lots of good info. OK - my question, is there a good way to switch from live to frozen/thawed? I have a one year old hypo striped corn that has been brought up on both but since I have had him he hasnt seemed interested in the f/t. Live mice he will devour. I have only had him for about a month, so it could be the fact that he is still getting use to his new surroundings - I just wasnt sure if anyone knew of a good way to make the transition. Do you put the f/t mouse in front of him or in front of his hide? Or just lay it anywhere in the tank and hope he finds it before it starts to rot?

Thanks in advance

When I try to switch a new arrival to frozen to thawed I have found that taking the prey item by the tail and dangling it infront of the snake will usually get the feeding response going. I will even give a few death throes even after it has constricted it.

It depends how you usually feed him. Mind have always been on f/t since I live in the UK and it's illegal to feed live and I have always hand fed them outside of the tank too. But about you, have you fed him at all since you have had him? I am not sure about him not eating because he is getting used to his surroundings. If he has been brought up on both he should eat the f/t. You can get a a thing called mouse maker in any pet store that deals in reptiles, (I think, we do here in the UK) and you put a couple of drops onto the mouse and it should entice the snake to it. I don't know if this works. You could also resort to braining, not particularly nice but effective.

I have fed him about 3 times now, all live with no problems what so ever. I just think that f/t is much easier and more convenient. I'll try dangling the thawed mouse in front of him and see how that goes. Thanks again for the input and by all means - keep it coming.

I use hemostats to keep my fingers out of harm way. Some sort of tongs or large tweezers would work great too.

You have to make that f/t mouse seem to the snake as if it might be alive. Keep trying!

Good Luck,
Quigs
