tail raising; how much longer 'till they breed?

This is my first year attempting to breed corns. Male was brumated since November. Female was brumated since December but remained fairly active in my warm but dark Florida garage.

Brought them out 2 weeks ago. They've eaten a couple of times. The female shed last weekend when I was out of town. I put them together this weekend. They were each doing the head jerking and both raised their tails but they never copulated.

How far are they away from breeding? I'm not sure what the window of time looks like. Is it a short 2-3 day window or do I have a couple of weeks worth of a window for a successful breeding?

The problem is that I work in Chicago during the week and return to St Petersburg on the weekends. Do I need to have my wife put them together during the week or am I safe just trying every weekend?

Whenever I see tails raised, they normally start breeding within 5 minutes. Maybe they just don't like being watched! Keep putting them together for a couple weeks, and leave them together over the weekend.

I rarely see females doing anything in the way of head jerking or tail lifting. They either avoid being bred or stay still and allow the male to do whatever he wants. I would recommend that you leave them together when you are around, preferably on newspaper so it it easier to see any copulation evidence. Hopefully she'll come around, but if both snakes continue to head jerk and then to even wrestle without the male doing his best to remain on top of the female and court her, you may actually have two males that are fighting.
