Tail-rattling

My adult corn snake is 3 years old, about 4-1/2 feet long, and has been rattling his tail occasionally when I approach his cage. He is not aggressive, and other than being a little bit nervous when handled, has a very good temperament. I have had him for about a week now, and he has not bitten me, or even attempted to strike me. I know that corn snakes rattle their tails when nervous but I thought this kind of behavior was limited to very small or neonate corns.

My adults do it all the time, especially when in their hides or feeding bins, especially when feeding or when I first reach for them in their homes. This is no indication at all of whether they feel fearful or aggressive. It seems to me more like a declaration of "I'm here, don't bother me now." Of course, if I want to get them out, I take them out anyway. I sometimes think it is more reflexive than intentional, except when feeding. But maybe that's because I don't want to think they don't want me to take them out!!
