Tank Upgrade Question!

Hi all.... been a while since i was here. I had lots going on.
Stewie has grown quite big now... hes about 4 1/2 ft and lives still in the 20 gallon tank because i couldn't and can hardly afford him a bigger one.
Im not so sure what size to upgrade as i looked at the 40gallon breeder and it looked small to me. Specially if i replace his current hides with bigger ones... he won't have space to move around.
So my question is, whats next size?
i am so not sure about buying a used tank or used hides but my local pet store is having a sale today on new tanks. The guy did mention something about a 55 gallon tank, but i think it is for fish not for reptile as he has said his biggest is the 40 breeder size.
Would the fish tank work? I just need him to have more space to move around.
Here's a pic.. i would appreciate all quick answers as the sale is only for a short time.

As far as I know, there should be no problem with putting him in a fish tank. They're pretty much the same thing, but the fish tanks are water tight.

That is a HUGE snake in a tiny viv.

I think you should be fine with a 55 fish tank! I'm not entirely sure, since I only just upgraded my corn from a 12x12x24 Exo Terra viv to a 10 gallon tank.

I believe the dimensions are more important than how many gallons it holds since the 55 gallons can be taller than wide, when you are actually wanting the other way around.

I just bought Voodoo a 40 gallon breeder tank a couple of days ago. She's 32" long and was in a 29 gallon fish Aquarium. The 29 gallon tank was 30X12X18 and this 40 gallon breeder is 36x18x16. It is a huge tank and I have two pretty large trees (one has a hide she is under now), and a small log type hide in ther as well as a couple of flat rocks and a medium sized water dish. She also has a wooden box in the back corner I built as a hide box. It is filled with Sphagnum Moss and she stays in there a lot too. All that and she still has lots of room to roam around, so I'm guessing your snake would be pretty comfortable in a 40 gallon breeder tank.

BTW. . . .one of those trees I have in there is exactly the same as you have in yours (the large on on the right side). The other (with the hide) is about the same size, but has a wider base and a hide under it.

Yes i know he is huge for that tank... i just have am going through a lot of health problems, have been disabled and unemployed for such a long time that i could not afford him an upgrade. But i just cant let him stay in that tank anymore.

the current size he's in is 30x12x13. I went to the pet store today and i saw the 55 gallon tank. it looked tall but very narrow as it was 48x21x13. Still i was willing to buy it. Unfortunately, they did not have a cover for it since it was for fish, it had 2 light strips. However they had a cover for 50 gallon yet no 50 gallon tank!

They had a 40 breeder (36x18x16) for 130$, not only i think that's expensive, the tank just looked so small to me. If i were to upgrade his hides and water dish... the tank would just look like a bigger version of what he has right now... he still won't have space to move around.. and he is a very active snake at night.. although lately he hasn't been cause he is in shed (it's taking forever)

Spurticus mentioned 55 gal reptile tank... where do i get something like that? Apparently it's going to be a specialty store, a reptile show, custom made or ordered online and how much would something like that cost.
I didn't know that finding a tank for a 5 ft snake is this hard.. i wonder how hard it is for people who have snakes over 15ft.
I appreciate all the answers.

I appreciate all the answers.

I picked up my 55gal at a local show and with the hood. It was suppose to be for a bearded dragon that my daughter wanted. We both decided a dragon required too much energy and so Kieran ended up with the tank. I spent less than $80 on the two.

If the price is right on the tall one, you might try laying it on the side. It gives them more floor space. They are really heavy though.

This is a 29gal that was given to me:

I have never thought of that before; flipping a tank on his side.... I think i might do that with my corn's tank when it becpmes full grown. I like your guy's setup too, very nice!

BTW, I have that smae exact critter keeper, cursed witch. I have the smae locking lid ect. :) Mine cost $56 at pet headquarters.

I was given two of these 29gal by a co-worker and I couldn't see not using them. I got the idea of laying it on it's side when my big guy got so big, but then he got moved into a 55gal reptile tank, which still doesn't seem big enough. The other one I can't lay on itside as my Ultramel thinks she's a treeboa (or maybe a ferret) and requires a "hammock", so need the wire top to hang it from. She doesn't need much surface space since she spends most of her time up in her papertowel roll :)

I've also laid 10gals on their sides while I waited for the money to come in, plus they don't require shelves to be so deep.

wow i like that idea too but i don't have to worry about upgrading my tank for awhile i have a 20 gallon High fish tank and my corn in only 12-14 inches right now, so it'll be a real long time before upgrading, but i think i'm gonna start saving up for it now lol from what i see coming down the road. You never know it might be easier and cheeper for you to build your own tank. Or buy a huge rubbermaid container and make it into a tank. All the vivs i've seen for snakes that are 8ft and longer are all man made tanks and not store bought.

Keep Checking places like craigslist or the local trade papers in your area.
I have actually found 50, 75, 100 gallon tanks and even bigger in them for extremely low costs.
I found a 100 gallon tank a month ago in my neck of the woods the guy was selling for 100$. Dude had it set up for tropical fish. It had the stand, the filters and the plumbing all for 100 bucks, simply because he got tired of cleaning the thing.
The add said it had calcium deposits on it now, but he would supply the scrapper and for $100 he felt like it was worth the price to have the person that bought it, clean it too !!
I called and the lady told me she had just sold it two days earlier. . . . . Found out the lady lived TWO BLOCKS FROM ME !!

Found one last weekend that was a couple hundred miles from here, but it was a 120 gallon tank the guy was selling with stand for 150 dollars. I was going to make the drive, but he told me it was first come first serve. . couldn't hold it. He called two days later and said a guy just came by and bought it.

I'd keep checking those lines. A lot of people sell them for as much as it cost to buy new, but keep looking . . .you'll run across a good deal

I picked up a 40 breeder for my geckos from craigslist with screen lid, stand, UTH, rheostat, light hood that holds like 3 bulbs, and a few decorations for pretty cheap. It was either $60 or $80...

55 gallon fish tanks are out there cheap too, I got one tank stand filter and plants and other assorted stuff for ~$120. Im getting out of keeping fish and will probably use that for my snake when he is big enough down the road.

Moral of the story? Never underestimate how badly someone will want to get rid of some of this stuff :D

That tank looks extremely cramped to me. Try removing a few things. All the snake needs to be happy is the following : Stretch space, a hide box, and its water bowel to soak in. Anything else might is probably too much.

Sorry i couldn't come back any earlier than this.
But, i found a tank on craigslist. I wanted a 55 gal, but I got a 45 Gal tank 36xL24Hx12D. I wasn't so sure about it because it seemed to be too tall and i was looking for something long (he still looks too long for the tank). I also got a UTH, a climbing thing, another rock thing with holes (for bearded dragons) and a log hide with it. All for $80!

It's been 8 days since i moved him but he barely uses the hides and he's always laying in one area ALL DAY! He's actually afraid of using the log hide for some reason. He still likes to climb, so the tall tank might be better for that.
Haven't gotten the chance to feed him yet, but hopefully tonight.

I want to get some vines and more accessories for him. Like another hide, a water dish and locks for the cage. The locks i have seem to be small.
Can anybody tell me of a good website with low S&H where I can buy this stuff. Petco is way too expensive.
Thanks
The New Viv (The setup is temporary)

It does seem to have alot of wasted space. Personally, I would try it laying down. Hard to tell from the picture, but think everything currently in there would still fit. So he should still have as much climbing ability as he currently has.

I thought about that, but i couldn't do it because the tank is too tall for the stand. The stand is 14" deep. It would stick out 10". And he won't have much climbing space 12" high, that wood climbing thing won't even fit. And not to forget i have no locks yet.

Maybe when i get the vines and stuff he'll have space to move around.
I just wanted to get him something for now because that other tank was so small.
Maybe until i can afford an upgrade.

Any idea where i can buy the rest of the stuff.
