Temp in the tank

the temp for corn snakes is ment to between 75-85F yes? my temp gauge reads 81F but i dont no if its hot enough for my snake coz it dont feel hot at all to me and he hasnt moved from where the heat mat is for almost a day. is it worth getting a heat lamp aswell or somin ?

Thanks

How have you set up the tank? :shrugs: Heat mat under the tank, inside the tank? More info please...

It shouldn't feel hot to you, if it does it'll be too hot for your snake. If you have a thermometer that's reading the right temperature with your heatmat, you shouldn't really need a lamp too

o ya sorry, i have the heat mat under the plastic tank ive got him in untill i can get his bigger glass one.

Well i jusr fead him and he took the pinky fine, so that means he's happy and fine yes?

Do you have a hide on both sides of your tank? If you've only got one hide on the heat mat, that's why he is staying there. Snakes will choose security over a correct body temperature, from my experience.

ya i have.
o and another question, when i get my glass tank will i need 2 out the heat mat inside the tank or still keep in under it?
Thanks again

ok but someone on the forum said that they use picture frame glass over the heat mat if it is inside the tank. Would it be ok if i did that ?
Thanks

A snake can still get under picture frame glass if you put it in the viv. You mount the UTH on the picture frame glass and then put it under the tank. The extra piece of glass reduces the heat a bit but more importantly helps distribute it more evenly.

ok thx for that. just one more question about the water now, i just read that you are not ment to use tap water coz it contains chlorine and fluoride that can be harmful to your snake. is this true? if so what water can i use?
thanks again, soz for all the questions.

Some people use bottled water, but I use the tap water. It's a 'hard water' area here, so I do have to give the bowls a good scrub. I also add a dilute dose of grapefruit seed extract weekly to prevent bacterial problems

ok so would you say bottled water would be ok? or could i leave tap water to stand in the sun light so the chlorine goes out of the water?
would that work
thanks

:shrugs: some bottled water has terrible records for bacterial count, some is really high in minerals. I just run the tap for a while and then use it, but other people would have different opinions

I use tap water, I've never had a problem.

In answer to your queries about glass plates over the mat, you only have the mat inside the tank if it's a wooden vivarium. Mats go under glass tanks, inside wooden tanks :)

If you're using a glass tank, be sure to raise the tank a few millimetres off the mat to allow some air circulation.
