temps question

Ok So I am a new cornsnake owner. I recently purchased an adult creamsicle, and everything has been going very well for about two months now. But I have a question. I am using newspaper as a substrate and have a thermostat with a probe and a thermometer with a probe. I have noticed a very big difference in temp (about 20 degrees) if I place both probes under the newspaper as opposed to placing both probes on top of the newspaper. I was wondering should I be placing the probes under the paper against the glass 20g aquarium floor or over top of the newspaper where ambient air temp plays a larger role. Oh I am using a UTH btw. I don't feel like this is a life or death situation but with winter coming I would at least like my little guy to be as comfortable as possible without burning up either.

It's best to have the probes against the glass. This way you know the *maximum* temperature it will ever get to. I have my probe buried under the substrate right next to where the thermostat probe is buried. This way I can see what temperature both probes are reading.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, I figured that was correct, thanks for the replies. When I first set up the viv I had them on top of the newsprint and had the warm side set to about 81-85. But when I placed the probes under the paper the therm shot up to like 99-100, which is way to hot. My snake has never gone under the paper to hide but if he did that would cause a problem. So I've had the probes under the paper ever since. But I'd thought I'd check since its getting cold and my apartment complex decided to change the heat from radiators to electric heat the very first cold week we've had. So its had definately been getting cold in here at night. But again thanks a lot for the replies. This site rocks!!!!!
