The Proper Cage Setup

I was wonder what I could do to give my corn a better environment. Right now he was aspen bedding, a hide, heating rock, heat lamp, a few climbing branches, and a large water dish. He seems to really like water so I replaced my small dish with a big one and he seems to like how the water feels on him ^.^ 'cause he gets really curious about water. Anyways, about humidity, his first shed didn't go very well, so what are some good tips for maintaining the proper humidity? I also read that heat laps can be drying up the environment. He has a heating rock but he never just rests on it, so should I keep the lamp or remove it? Also, should I replace the rock with a pad so I can put another hide over it?

Heat rocks are super duper dangerous you need a UTH. Between your lamp and rock the cage humidity is probably pretty low not to mention thoe rock cause some serious burns. Other than getting a UTH and ditching the other heating sources all a cage needs is two hides one for each side, and a water bowl.

Well I guess I'll be the 1st to say this (at least for this post) remove the heat rock... They are bad news; notoriously known for overheating and causing burns to the snake. Try to return it if you can.

A heat pad will be your best option, I have mine on the side of my tank with a 1/2 log next to it.

What are the vivs temps? (hot and cool side) Depending on the temps of the tank and your home and the season matter in regards to the heat lamp. What kind of lamp are you using? Wattage?

The bigger water dish should help with the humidity since the lamp is responsible for the evaporation of the water for the most part. Once the snakes eyes go "blue" for a shed you can give the snake a little bath, mine loves the bath tub. You can also add a container with damp paper towels, I did that for my snakes 1st shed and it was a perfect shed, I also found him inside the cup with the damp paper towels after.

Ah I was beaten to the punch by 2 minutes! haha

Thank you soooo much. I'll replace the rock asap. I'll try that, with the wet paper towel. The more posts I get the better. I want to get this down good. I'm a beginner (obviously D:).

No problem. Humidity really isn't an issue with corns till they are about to shed and that's when the damp towels come in handy IMO. I've only been keeping my snake for about two months now and at first I thought it'd be more work then it actually is. You'll get it down pat sooner or later, good luck

He'll be sitting in the water because it's too hot, and that's also the most likely explanation for the bad shed. You don't need more than one heat source - the lamp on its own will do the job, but you need to regulate it with a thermostat so that it doesn't get too hot. Ditching the heat rock is a great move. Most people use an undertank heater (UTH or heat mat), as belly heat is best for Corns.

As well as a thermostat for your heat source, you need to invest in a good thermometer, so that you can tell what the temperatures are at the warm and cool ends. You're already seeing the sorts of problems that can happen when it gets too hot. Avoid the strip thermometers or the dial-type ones, as these are notoriously inaccurate.

I'd also say that you need more than one hide - in fact, get as much ground cover in there as possible. Corns are naturally secretive and like to stay hidden whenever possible when they're young. Their confidence grows as they get old, and they're more often out and about once they've settled down.

Thanks for the advice. I'm about to go to the store in a couple minutes to puchase a UTH and another hide and hopefully good thermometers. I'll let you know the cages final result as soon as it's finnished.

Sounds very good!! Just make sure you have a hide both on the warm and cool side and the temps under your substrate should be in the low to mid 80's where the UTH is. The UTH goes on the bottom of the tank, but never inside and you outta get a rheostat to control how hot the UTH gets. Without a rheostat they easily get to 110-120 degrees so purchase a rheostat you can plug the UTH into to avoid this.
