knowing the quality of her parents, I knew how this "ugly" baby bloodred (given as present to a friend of mine) would become in a year.....

Corns change a lot from hatchling to yearling and beyond to adulthood. Bloodreds like that have what's called the Diffused gene which is a pattern changing trait. As the snake gets older it's pattern becomes less and less seeable. The gene itself diffuses the lower lateral patterns as well as removign the checkers on the bell.

Bloodreds are a line-bred trait meaning that snakes showing the brightest red and most diffusion were bred with other snakes like itself to provide even more diffusion to give us the bloodreds we have today. Genetically there is nothing different with a Bloodred and a snake with Diffusion.

If you'd like, Ian's Vivarium has pics of about 130 different morphs of cornsnake. http://www.iansvivarium.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/cornmorphs.html
