The wait is killing me

Once a baby begins to pip, how long does it take for the baby to come out of the shell. My first little guys is just sitting with his nose out of the shell. The others have not begun. This is my first clutch and I am quite excited :) :)

Once they've pipped they often take a break to rest up before copming all the way out. You should be expecting some hatchling in anywhere from half an hour to maybe 5 hours from now. It'll probably be closer to a half hour that 5 hours. All the hatchlings may take a few days to get out of there shells but hopefully they'll all be out in a day or so!

Congradulations on the first clutch!

My first clutch should be pipping any day now. I'm just like you, can't wait!

I can sympathize completely with you. My eggs are on day 58 today, the shells have been softening over the last couple of days, and I can't wait to see the 1st head appear.

I've had some take as long as 12 -24 hours to come completely out. The wait is really hard because it's hard to see markings until they're out.

It can definitely take up to a full day for them to completely hatch so be patient. I would say it takes about 6-24 hours for them to completely hatch after pipping. They are still absorbing the yolk and you don't want them to come out too soon.

Huh, guess I got my numbers wrong, sorry. I thought I was almost quoting Kathy Love on that, but I'll have to check the book. Sorry. I had heard of them taking a full 24 hours, but though it was rare.

Some are certainly quicker than others, but most of mine take 6-12 hours. My creamsicle clutch took over a week for all 20 to come out. A few sat in their eggs for days. :shrugs: What's up with that? LOL

Most of mine have taken between 12 and 24 hours to come out, and several have taken more than 24 hours - nearly 48 once or twice. At the moment I have my last one of a clutch of 17 pipping - the others are all out - and it's been pipping since at least 5pm yesterday (it's now nearly 11am). So don't worry - sometimes they're slow, but they need the time to absorb their yolks and prepare themselves for the world outside.

Thanks guys. That eases me. The little bugger has finally decided to come see the world. :) Now one if his mates is deciding to take a peep. They are soo cute. I do have another question though, He seems to have what I would say are minor kinks. Is this normal?

No, kinks aren't normal. Have you got a picture? It's believed that often they have something to do with incubation - too hot, too cool (less commonly), or too much humidity. What sort of temperature were you incubating at? It may also have nothing to do with your setup as it could be a genetic mutation. Keep us posted on how the others are and try to post a pic of the little one if you can.

I incubated at 82 degrees. My second one came out this morning without kinks. :) How do I go about posting a pic?

My first clutch here is taking forever to completely hatch. The first one pipped almost a week ago and there are still two left pipping.

Good news about your second one. To post pics, when you click on reply, scroll down to where it says "manage attachments" under Additional Options. Click on this, and then you can browse to where you have your pic stored and click on it, then attach it by clicking on "upload". They have to be a certain size - I can't remember offhand but I always need to downsize mine from around 2000 x 1500 pixels to about 700 x 525 pixels. Good luck!

Divapixie, I've found the same thing with my clutches. That's one thing I've found that's definitely different from the textbooks - albeit it may be due to a problem with heat distribution in my incubator. My recent clutch of 17 hatched over a week also - the first egg pipped on June 24th, and the last baby emerged on July 1st. All hatched normally and are healthy.

I think they are all finished now. The latest one was severely deformed and I had to put it down. There's still one egg left but I'm beginning to think it died inside. My secod clutch from my other female has started hatching so I'm being kept busy.
