Hey, got a quick question, wondering were everybody puts there thermo meter. i have mine on the cool side of the cage and none on the hot side. but i have a dimmer to regulate my heat pad and light and i keep the cool side around 70-75 degrees all the time. Was wondering if i should put it on the hot side or what. Or just judge the hot side by looking at the cool side temp. I monitor the heatpad bye feel on the bottom of the tank. Also the Hydro meter. a good explanation would help alot. Thanks Joe

I measure the temp by placing the thermometer probe on the floor surface of the warm side (the snake's on the floor, so that's the critical place for temperature). Having a temp that's too hot, is more dangerous to the Corn than having a cool area that's too cool. I wouldn't recommend judging the heat of the heatpad just by touch.

I put the probe directly over the hot spot to read the hot temp, I use a laser temp gun to do spot checks on the cold side. My hydro meter is about halfway up the back wall more towards the warm side.

What is really nice, and it was recommended to me here is a digital duo probe thermometer. I got mine at BigAppleherp.com but I'm sure I've seen them cheaper. You cannot go by the feel of the heatpad, I found that out when I measured my heat mat at 100-105 and to me it was just nice & warm, but not at all hot but that is way too hot for the snakes. I've been told to put the probe right over the heat pad as recommended, and underneath the substrate. I just finally got mine all going properly last night and I'm kinda wondering how not to keep the cool side much cooler - it's reading about 75-76 which I guess is ok. It doesn't seem like the 10gl tank I have is big enough to allow any more difference - my warm side is 85-86.

Good luck, this sight has been great!
