Thermometers, timers, other questions

Hi everyone!

So a question about thermometers. We all know how important they are to both spot check and monitor your setup.

WHich are your favorites?

I currently have the combo temp/humidity type that stick on the back of the tank, and it sucks. So looking for new ones for both my 30 gal tanks.

Also going to be setting up a rack system for bins once I get my new stock so will need to have monitoring on those as well.

WOuldn't mind being able to periodically "spot check" temps as well in different spots that aren't being montiored so looking for a good solution for that.

Kinda hoping to not totally break the bank either :p Links to where I could buy such products would be extremely helpful.

I also am getting an infrared light for my python tank. THe tanks are in my basement and the ambient temp is in the low to mid 70's and the UTH just doesn't keep up with the cooler temps down there. I know lights dry things out etc etc but reality is my poor charmer needs an additional heat source. I want to put it on a timer, or programmable dimmer or something like that.... ANy ideas?

Thanks in advance for the help!

I use this thermometer, the two location thermometer dual probe for $16.99.

If I'm using it with two tanks, both get a probe in the hot side. If I'm using it with one tank, it gets a probe in the hot side (center of the UTH, on the glass) and the cold side. If I'm using it in a rack, I place one probe in the top bin, right over the heat cable, and one probe in the same bin, just off the heat cable. I want to know the very hottest area in the rack, which is the top bin.

Oh, and for heat, not light, I like CHEs (ceramic heat elements) and you can put them on the Coralife Power Center which is a REALLY nice power strip with always on, day and night timing. I just Google it to find the cheapest place, usually on eBay. I _think_ my CHE for Isabel's 40 breeder is a 75 watt and it will raise the ambient temp about 10F. With an open top.

I'm not sure what's in your area, but NGM Exotics have been great at answering my questions so far and they carry a range of temperature control products. I've been happy with the ZooMed thermostat so far, but it doesn't have a timer.

I'm in Canada, and in the boonies to boot :( Prince George for pet supplies has a TOtal Pet (rediculous prices) and Petland (better prices but still rediculous)

Seems there's not alot of good stuff online either for Canadians, and US companies charge REDICULOUS shipping.

For example, from Big Apple, for two of the thermometers that Nanci mentioned it's THIRTY DOLLARS US for shipping :s More expensive than the product! LOL

I like temp guns, but IMO a probed thermometer is essential. You can instantly, at a glance, check all temps in your set up two or three times a day. I can't tell you how many times I've found problems, such as a dead UTH, by just a daily check. If you are spot checking with a temp gun, it would take a very dedicated keeper to check say 30 snakes daily.

I don't use a timer for any snakes, just lizards.

I almost forgot the guy that built me some tanks last year, Greg West at Cornelsworld here in Calgary. He carries a few more heating and temperature control products than NGM.
