im going to buy a thermostat, but im wondering, how do you connect a thermostat to my existing heat mat, assuming you do actually have to connect them.

thanks

The thermostat should have a place for things to plug into it. Mine has a end sticking out of one side that looks like the end of an extention cord with three places to plug in. I'll see if I can take a picture of it.

hope this works, first time iv posted any pics on here. thats the only thing that looks anything like a connector on my heat mat not sure whether thats it tho.

This is one of those things that's hard to explain without showing you, so I'm going to try my best to explaine it with pictures. I hope this helps! :)

The plug in the first picture is the plug for my under the tank heater. The thing I'm pluging it into is the thermostat. I have two under the tank heaters plugged into it.

ok.... i think i understand. so all you have to do is plug the power lead from the heatmat into a connector on the thermostat?. i take it your american, from the plugs your using, we have 3 pronged plug heads over here, hope all thermostats have a connector available for this! lol thanks for all your help, im gettin the thermostat due to a regurge, want to make sure i get everything perfect!

Yep I'm in america! and you're right on the money about how to use the UTH with the thermostat too. I bet all the thermostats over there will have the right amount of prong holes lol. Just make sure you keep a close eye on your temps untill you get the thermostat set just right, it took me a few days to get mine set. You might want to check out some of the threads here on regurges, there is some helpful stuff here - http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20116

I'm not the right person to answer this one, sorry. I just don't know much about them. There are people here that will be able to help out though, just gotta wait for them to show up lol.

lol....sori about that! never realised it had gone onto 2 pages so didnt think the last one had worked!

I'm no expert but...

I have also been looking into getting a thermostat, b/c I just don't feel confident when I leave my apartment. The temps are just so dependent on many different factors that are out of my control once I leave (windows, doors, fans...), with the big one being me not being around to make adjusts to the rheo when needed. Anyways, I have been doing some research on here and on fauna and there seem to be quite a few stories of animals getting cooked due to thermostat malfunctions with the less expensive models. Now, I am sure many people have the $30 type thermostats and have never had a problem, but going with something more expensive (Helix, BAH Proportional, etc) gives greater accuracy and reliability. I know it is more money (~$100) but I would rather spend a little extra now and not cook my $80 animal and have to spend $80 more to get another. Besides, that thermostat can be used for multiple set-ups if/when I get more snakes. When I leave my apartment I want to feel safe knowing that my setup isn't going to malfunction. Now this is all just MY OPINION. Hopefully this helps!
