Thinking about a corn snake!

I have a bearded dragon that is about to out grow his small enclosure and I will be moving to a bigger one in the next few weeks. I was thinking of getting a corn snake to house in the 20L gallon tank. First would it be ok to house a corn in such an enclosure? (baby, juvenile or adult); of course disinfected first. Second can you point me to some respected care sheets and breeders of corn snakes; I'm in Arizona if that makes any difference. Third the few care sheets I have looked at say nothing about UVB; does a corn not need UVB?

Hi there, and welcome to the forum!

A 20L is generally sufficient size for an adult corn snake, and would be great for a younger corn snake too if you provide lots of hides for the little one so he/she can feel safe.

Also, corns do not need the UVB like many reptiles do, they get all their vitamins and such from the mice they eat. You can even rule out the light completely and go with an undertank heater if you prefer.

You've come to the right place if you have questions:) post away, and we'll be happy to help!

Oh yeah! I also meant to point you to the Cornsnake Manual, by Kathy Love. Its basically the cornsnake keepers bible, and you can pick on up at almost any pet store, or online at her website (and get an autographed version) at www.cornutopia.com. :)

And for feeders, I by frozen in bulf from Big Cheese Rodent Factory - best quality feeders in my opinion. I think their website is www.bigcheeserodent.com

Welcome!

A 20L will be good enough for most adult corns, so you shouldn't have to upgrade the tank at all.

Breeders: Rich Zuchowski (www.serpenco.com), Don Soderberg (www.cornsnake.net), Kathy Love (www.cornutopia.com).

Those are the big three, there are a number of smaller breeders that are on this website: Joe Pierce, Serp & Connie (www.cccorns.com), and a few others out in California: Stephen and Carol (not sure of her website).

Care Sheets: Pick up the Corn Snake Manual from Kathy Love, available on her website: www.cornutopia.com

I will also like my Basic Care FAQ sheet so you can browse over it. I know that Don also has a care sheet on his website.

Ultraviolet is not necessary for corns since they are not active during the day.

Feeding Supplier: www.rodentpro.com, www.themousefactory.com, www.bigcheeserodents.com

And PS: Darn you Katie!.

Well shoot! At least Joe got the big cheese website address correct. I may type faster, but at least you have the right info Joe. :)

one thing to point out that no one else here covered is that on the 20L gallon tank you will need to escape proof it! there are different methods to this. Screen top clips made by ESU is one way. Some people just stack heavy objects such as books on the top. i put a piece of velcro on each corner of the tank and then i put an opposite piece(hard/soft) of velcro on the corners of the tank lid.

Well I'm gonna need to get me a new screen top anyway; are there any that have a lock of some sort I can get? Any links?

Nope. All-Glass makes Critter Cages that have a sliding locking lid, but there are no seperate lids to my knowledge that have locks on them.

You'll need to buy clips or something.

And a word of warning...cornsnakes are very addicting. You start with just one but most people end up with several, while others (and I'm in this group) end up never being satisfied and always wanting "just one more". I'm currently over 90 and will soon go over the 100 point with keepers and new purchases this year.

Actually, I picked up locking lids with my tanks at WalMart. I'm not sure how many sizes they have, but they're pretty secure - no buckling in the middle and a tight fit.

Hi! welcome to the forums fellow desert dweller! :) There are a few shops areound here that sell seperate sliding lids that would work great for a corn if you have that kind of tank. Az Reptiles Center and Predators Reptiles are both good places to try. Corns, like beardies don't need the UVB because D3 is not as critical for them, so your new baby should be fine. What kind are you looking for? Between all of us out here, I'm sure you'll find just what you're looking for.

ALL snakes are addictive..but corns especially...their husbandry requirements and affordability make them easy to pile up...LOL

I will catch you both one day...
I have 23 snakes in my house...11 of them corns...
Before next week is through...I should have 36...with two more being corns...
Slowly but surely...LOL
Well not so slowly...just started keeping snakes again late last July...
COMPLETELY addictive...
Worse than crack...every week I budget my salary against what I am currently looking to purchase...

LOL

The real watch-out comes when you start finding them outside and don't have to pay for them anymore. ;)

Speaking of.....I'm heading to West Texas on Tueday. A full 6 days of nothing but soaking in the herptofauna of the mystical Trans-Pecos.

Pay the shipping and you've got yourself a deal. Subocs are quite common.....especially when you're looking for Alterna.
