Today In History - Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima is a historic photograph taken on February 23, 1945, by Joe Rosenthal.

It depicts five United States Marines and a U.S. Navy corpsman raising the flag of the United States atop Mount Suribach during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II.

Today is the 68th Anniversary of the Battle for Iwo Jima. Over 7,000 Marines killed and over 20,000 injured. We remember!

I am in awe of those that have sacrificed so much to give us the liberty we enjoy.

One of the men in that picture is a distant relative of mine. His name is Renee Gagnon, related through my mother--another Gagnon. Something to be proud of in my family.

Sad to think that half the men in that picture later died in the remainder of the battle.
