Ok, Guad is still on hunger strike. I tried soaking her fuzzy in warm chicken broth. She picked it up in her mouth and then put it back down. Why does she do that?? What the H does that mean? What kind of snake is this that moves food around to different places? Ugh!

She moves it around and doesn't eat it? Try cutting it open (gross I know) and let her smell the blood. Or drag it around to hopefully get her interested in it. I hope she starts eating.

My first guess is that she burned her mouth. How warm was your chicken broth? If it felt warm to you, it would have been downright HOT to your snake. Anything below 90 F would likely feel slightly cool to you, while still being quite warm for your snake.

How long has Quad's hunger strike been going on? How old is she?

"She" (if that is, in fact, her gender) is 4 years old. She was always a great eater until almost 2 months ago.

You may be right, that broth was warm to me, so maybe it was too hot for her, but I did wait a few seconds before giving it to her, also she waited a few minutes before deciding to briefly care about it...so I'm hoping it didn't hurt her too much. Then I left her with it overnight, and she didn't eat. It's a good thing she's deaf, so she can't her the expletives I should every time I realize she's not eaten...

We have a vet appt next week because I'm getting a bit worried.

Best of luck, and let us know how it goes.

I don't know if it will help, but have you tried using tongs to wiggle the mouse around to get her attention? My corn is an eating machine, but I recently aquired a young ball python that will do something similar. She moves toward the mouse, strikes at it, holds the body in her mouth sideways (like a dog holding a bone! It's actually really funny!), then spits it out and wanders away. But if I pick up the mouse with tongs, and drag it around like it's trying to escape, she strikes, coils, and sucks it down.

Best of luck! I hope there is nothing wrong with her. Let us know how her appointment goes!

I feed mice at about 102-104F. They feel quite warm to me, even hot. Think of what the mouse's body temp would be.

Still- two months isn't bad. She isn't in danger of starving yet. I wouldn't even bother with any scenting tricks. I'd still keep trying smaller mice every ten days or so.

When you go to the vet, will you be able to get her correctly sexed?

Yes, that is one of my goals at the vet. After I got through listening to their husbandry spiel for the hundredth time, I made sure that they'd be able to sex "her" for me...

I hate to say it... She sounds like a He on a hunger strike, my big male mouths food every once in a while but still has refused to eat. It is soooooo frustrating... Sorry to here your going through this..

That's what I'm thinking...I think that would be better news compared to illness though...Oh well, I guess she'll just have to be a he with a girl's name!

If I tried to feed mine (male) during his hunger strike, he very often would grab the mouse and let it go. Sometimes he'd drag it off somewhere, but would never eat it. It's like the urge to feed fighting the urge to breed!

I'm sure your snake, whether male or female, is fine, will keep fingers crossed and hope the vet confirms nothing looks wrong. Keep us posted!

Vet says Guad is fine. Is is a bit concerning that she's still not interested in food, but everything else about her is healthy, as I suspected. She's .85 kg...does that seem right? Isn't that 850 g. Am I doing math right? Stupid math.

Yes, you're doing the math right. That's a BIG girl! Adult corns can go for a very long time without eating, and a large adult can go months. Since the vet says she's healthy, as long as her living conditions are fine (which they seem to be) I'd offer food once per week. I know it's frustrating if she's not interested, but try not worry about it. She'll eat again eventually.

Did the vet check for eggs? Even if she has never been with a male, it is possible for her to produce infertile eggs, in which case she probably will not eat until they are laid.

YAY!

She finally ate! I think it was almost 3 months since she last ate. Quite a hunger strike for a girl...

She went through a seemingly difficulty shed over the past 2 weeks, and when she was done, she was hungry. Yay! Hopefullly this doesn't happen again, but I'll be prepared for it next year if it does!

Thanks for everyone's help.

Sarah
