Time Delay

I was just reading and researching and wondering how long the time delay is between mating and laying the eggs, then how long after that the eggs hatch. I am sure I sound dumb, but that is probably b/c I am really new at this. one last thing are corn snakes protective of thier young or do they tend to eat them or ignore them all togeather?

Five to eight weeks is a ballpark figure for the time between mating and egg laying. And a range of 50-80 days for incubation. The range is due to various factors, of which temperature is probably the most important. Eggs hatch within a day or two of 60 days when incubated at a constant temperature of 84 F.

Most snakes have little to no interaction between mother and babies. Corn snake females abandon the eggs soon after laying them. So we owners take the eggs out of the cage and incubate them in more appropriate conditions. Hatchlings would have their own cages rather than be put in the mother's cage. The larger snake would try to get all the food which would result in Stupid Feeding Errors.

I believe that Bill and Kathy Love have a new edition of The Corn Snake Manual. I haven't seen it, but I have a copy of the first edition. Either would provide answers to a lot of your questions and get you up to speed a lot faster than a forum like this one. I would have killed for a copy when I was starting with herps.
