Time to order new mice, what size?

Right now my snake is about 1 year old, and currently is eating 4 fuzzies because I ordered in bulk, and I am getting rid of them.

Since he is eating so many fuzzies, I was wondering if I should go to hoppers, or if weanlings would be too big, as it is hard to judge based on the pictures online.

Wait he's not eating 4 fuzzies in one session is he? But yeah, you could try and move him up to hoppers, if you have a set of digital scales then you could weigh him and follow the Munson Plan as a guideline.

I exchanged emails with the folks at Rodent Pro. Give them a call when you order (instead of just online) and they can be somewhat flexible in selling you smaller batches. I ended up buying pinkies at a show, so I didn't try it out.

I agree with this. You can always inquire about getting smaller orders rather than just going with the "minimum order size". I'm never afraid to ask if I can get say 25 hoppers instead of 50, but I also try to make sure not to ask for special quantities unless I'm ordering several things. I figure most places are more likely to bend their rules if I'm placing a decent sized order than if I only want 25 hoppers and nothing else.

If he's eating 4 fuzzies at a time, he can definitely go up to hoppers and maybe even something a bit bigger. Perhaps try buying feeders 1 or 2 at a time at a local pet store to get a feel for how big you can go before you place another order, and stick the general 1.5x the widest part of the snake rule. Also, when/if you buy bulk consider buying a cheap vacuum sealer (or try to find someone you know who has one) and re-package the bulk mice in aliquots of 4 or 5. That way they should last longer, if you need them to.

How do you know when its too big? Will your snake just not eat it? I have never had this proble, so I don't really know. I am going to move one of my snakes to a larger mouse size how big is too big and will I know?

If the mouse is too big the snake will eat it and then later reguritate it. I would ask rodent pro for 25 hoppers and 25 weanlings if i were you.....

Ok, as I kind of asked before. I think I might be feeding my snake way to small of a mouse. I feed him 2 fuzzies a week. I'm swithing him up to hoppers now. His age is a mystery I have had him for 3 years now he was probably a year old when I bought him. Am I under feeding him right now? If I am please tell me so I can do something about it immediately. I love my snake and would hate to be harming him in any way.

Serafino, if your snake is four years old, it should be pretty much adult size and thus eating adult mice. I think the case must be that it's pretty underfed. :/

Ok thanks a bunch I'm going to start feeding him a whole lot bigger mouse then thanks a whole whole bunch for helping me out I'm off to the store to buy bigger mice right now :).

I agree. A rule of thumb is ...feed you snake a food item that is 1 1/2 times the snake girth. So... time to move up.

Hey Liselle Is that your picture?? It looks cool!

Back on topic.
I only have two snakes of difference age. So I asked the company (a different one) and they said if I separated the order and put the in freezer zip lock bags then put them in Tupperware containers that it would keep the food for a much longer time. I try it and it dose work.
Try it. You could order larger quantity then.

Do a search for the munson plan it requires a scale that can read grams but thats it and is a pretty decent system as far as I can see.

Where do you buy your scales? I just bought the right sized mouse so thanks a whole bunch you guys I'm waiting for it to warm to feed him as I type this :)

You can get them at wal-mart for like 25 bucks I am going to look around online and see if I can find something a little cheaper

Ok I have a scale now the plan says I should be feeding him adult mice which is what I did. Is it ok to feed him a little more often to help him gain weight. Which he is under for his age. I feed him every 7 days would it be ok to feed like every 4-5 for a little while to help him pack on the grams?
