Tokay Gecko

I don't really know anything about keeping geckos and never really had an interest in them. Then last summer I went to PA and happened to go to a pet shop for the heck of it. They had a rather large gecko that really caught my eye. It was blue and orange! It was also like $200.

Since then I've looked around and found out it was a Tokay Gecko but I still don't know what their prices are.

Anyone on here know anything about them? How much are they? Do they make good pets? Can you handle them? Are they easy to care for?

Wildcaught adult tokays are sold for about 22 USD at Petco here. Dunno about captive hatched prices.
Tokay morphs are also starting to show up.

I recommend you look at TIPS, as it's a website all for tokays ran by someone who is also on PangeaReptiles.

$200 is insane for a common normal, and I think is a bit high for most if not all of their morphs. Tokays have the reputation of being mean and a bite from them really hurts apparently. There is a person that sells them though, she usually has ads on kingsnake and she is sometimes called the Tokay whisperer, all the ones she produces are calm and gentle from what I've heard. I don't remember her name (I think it is a woman) offhand but I can try to find it for you.

$200 is way too much for a tokay. I had one for a few years...they are mean little buggers! Their bite hurts like heck, and they will not hesitate to give you one. I personally will never own another!

Yeah I've read they are mean. But also read some could be tamed. I just think they are really pretty. If I do end up getting one I guess it will be more like a display animal.

I figured that price was too much.

IMO search for a good breeder. I THINK Syn may breed them as she(?) runs TIPS, and I've seen plenty of pictures of people holding tokays over on PangeaReptile.

I think if you spend the time finding a well respected breeder who will talk one-on-one to find you a single tokay to keep as a pet that's hand tame you'll be happy.

I'm not sure about price I found mine outside my bf's apartment lol but they are EVIL! They are not geckos to handle, the bite and bark at you. I don't even take them out of their viv to clean, I very carefully clean around them. If I get too close they will lunge at me lol. They are very pretty but I would not have bought them.

They are bottomless pits as far as geckos. Mine eat a lot of crickets, more then any of my other lizards and an occassional pinkie.

There are examples of hand-tamed ones, but for the most part if you buy one, content yourself with it being a pretty display animal. I think NERD raises various morphs, many of which are fairly tame animals.

The wild caught ones are cheap, but loaded with parasites and often fail to thrive.

I know this is a super old thread, but I was searching to see if anyone had ever brought up Tokays on here. $200?! I sell them at my store for $15.99!

I love Tokays and would like to get another eventually. I don't think personally that they are "mean" Just really really scared. If kept with other geckos tokays will not even get enough to eat. My little golden ate more than my tokay if I didn't give them enough. They are very shy.
