Too Much Soaking Time?

Moxie seems to be spending more time in her water dish the last couple days. The book says they will spend "excessive time" there if they have mites or other skin irritation or if they get too hot. I don't see any black specks or skin problems and the warm side of the tank is 85F. Is it the humidity? I haven't bought a humidity guage, but our house humidity is about 45% right now and I give the tank a water spray once a day. She maybe spends 30 minutes in the dish a day, 15 in the morning and 15 at night - is that "excessive" or normal?

Some snakes just like to sit in their water bowls, especially if they haven't had access to one big enough to get into before. I'd say if you inspect her very closely and her skin appears healthy and she doesn't have mites, she just likes water!

My BP used to do it, he got over it though. Maybe just a phase??? For now, it seems normal just make sure to check her out for skin problems and look close to the eyes and under the mouth for mites (that's where they usually are)
Good luck!

out of my 12 snakes, one reverse okeetee LOVES to stay in his water bowl and now that my creamsicle is getting alittle bigger, she seems to be getting in it more often. None of my others sit in their water bowls and they all have the same temps/humidity.

Yeah, I would pay extra attention to her for the next week or two just to make sure there's nothing wrong. But it may be a case of a hydrophilic snake. I have a lavender who I see in her bowl 90% of the time - she's 100% healthy. Also 110% bizarre in that regard. So if there's no obvious sign of an external infection, and she's eating, pooping, and shedding just fine, then I wouldn't worry about it.

If you have ruled out the other things like dry humidity, problem shed, mites, I would bet the snake is using the water bowl as a hide. It is not normal or good for a corn snake to spend 90% of it's time under water. I would try giving it some new or different hides. Give it a choice of where to hide.

I'd also change to a smaller water bowl for a while.

Thanks for all your advice and tips. But, of course since I posted my question, I haven't seen her in the water bowl once. I guess she just wanted to go swimming! She may have wanted another hide too. She has two, but soon I am going to get some artificial vine/leaves to give her more places to hide. She is pretty shy, but with our rambunctious kids maybe I don't blame her. :shrugs:
