Too smart for the traps!

Love and Hisses
My motley butter (who was apparently a CIA agent in a former life) has escaped AGAIN!

She is too smart for the Loves' snake traps. She will enter the bottle, eat the pinky, and make her way out and hide again instead of getting stuck in there like she's s'posed to. Last time, I was lucky enough to find her. This time, she is still MIA.

I know she's around somewhere, because she took the bait. Anyone have any better trap ideas? (done the crinkly paper, fairly large room so the toothpicks bit will be a last resort)

How on earth does she keep escaping? She lives in a sterelite bin with mountains of books stacked on top of it. I can't even lift them all at once, how can a little tiny snake push the top of the bin up with all of that weight on it?

Crazy snake. Too bad she's so beautiful. Why is it the pretty ones can always get away with stuff?

Sigh.

Thanks for any help you can give,
Jamie Lynn

Gotta remember, she doesn't have to push the entire lid up, just enough for her to squeeze out. So could be that you have all those books stacked up in the middle, but the top is pliable enough for her to nudge up along the sides somewhere. Just a thought. Good luck getting her back.

Put another trap out and wait up.

Once you get her back into her sterilite, put some binder clips on there to attach the lid to the container. Just stacking books on the top of the lid isn't sufficient, as you know.

what type of lid do you have? If there's any kind of recess for the lid or a handle area that may be where she escapes. Even with weights a recess or handle area can provide an out. I've had good luck with Rubbermaid Snap-Toppers for younger snakes.
Would it be possible to put a small hide inside the bottle so she can hide there instead of leaving the bottle?
If you find her, she may have learned a trick and try to escape right away. Try watching her on the sly for a bit - maybe she'll show you her technique. Good luck!

:)

I've heard that upside down packing tape can work. It's a bit of a bugger to get off, but it will slow them down enough to catch them.
Good luck!

What about a glue trap. You would have to go thru the pain of using some vegtable oil to clean it up and something else to clean the oil but i am sure it would work.

Well, at least you know what general area she's in, and that she's currently not starving.

Always good to look at the bright side. ;)

So she's gotten out before and you've still never found exactly how she got out?
You have to find out how she's getting out. If you don't find it soon, I'd suggest a new cage as you can't fix a problem if you don't know what exactly the problem is.

I don't have any suggestions for you as far as tricking the snake into being found. You seem to know all the tricks in the book.
Don't get lazy and assume that those tricks will find her for you. Keep looking. That's how I found my snake in the end. None of the traps worked, period, and he didn't even eat the mouse I set out for him.

Putting flour on the floor might help you see which direction she's crawling. That's pretty much all it will be able to do for you since you already know where she is.

Don't give up!

I've heard of people having decent success by placing plastic grocery bags on the floor, but, obviously, you have to be around to hear the crinkle for it to work. Try seting up several traps and surround them with the plastic bags so if she gets hungry, which she will, you'll be able to hear her go for the food. Best of luck in finding the little goober!

My nearly 4 footer escaped between feeding a few weeks ago. He was probably out at least a few days before I noticed, but when I went looking I found him curled up in the bottom of my closet, which is only around 2 feet away from the tank.

Just keep setting up the traps and triple check all possible hiding areas close to the cage.

Good luck! :)
