Tragedy at the North Pole

Thanks to a thermostat malfunction my snake room reached 114 degrees this morning, killing 11 of my 12 gravid female corns, along with all of my 2003's and 2004's. One of those females was my favorite normal corn caught right here on the farm that got me interested in corns to begin with.

I am now left with one lone Okeetee female and eight adult males of various morphs (and the miami phase male is looking pretty weak).

I have been sick over this all day. This really sucks!!!!!!

Wow, that is a disaster. I'm very sorry to hear about your misfortune. I bet you're just devastated, I know I would be. Heating units for these guys makes me paranoid enough. To come home to that would just be awful.

Best wishes to the remaining corns that they recover uneventfully.

:(

Sorry to hear about your loss. That is devastating!

What kind of thermostat were you using? That info might help others in the future.

Q

I'm so sorry to hear of your losses  You must be completely devistated. I hope the others pull through OK.
At least you were able to save some of them AND your home. I know that's small consolation, but imagine if the heating unit had caused a fire??

The thermostat was made here in NC by HogSlat. It has had a good reputation and is used in hundreds of swine production facilities across the Carolinas. I intend to bring it back to them tomorrow just to tell them how impressed I am. :santa:

I'm so sorry for your loss. I know there are no words anyone can say to make your loss any easier but I just wanted to post my hearfelt sympathies. I hope you (and magick bears who suffered a similar tragedy due to pest spraying) will be able to nurse your remaining snakes back to health. I think you should try to calculate the value of the snakes you lost so you can get some kind of compensation from the manufacturer, after all you trusted your entire collection to their product and it malfunctioned, write it up and take it with you when you go see them. Of course money can't possibly make up for the loss of your favorite snake but I still think they should give you something.

That's absolutely horrible. I'm terribly sorry you lost so many of your snakes. I can't begin to imagine my meager collection experiencing such an event.

You should show those HogSlat folks how we handle product dissatisfaction in the Carolinas. :twoguns:

That's horrible!

So sorry to hear of your loss.

It happened to me once in my baby room (electric heater got the room too hot), but only killed everything on the top row.

It sure would be nice to set up an exhaust fan with a thermostat so that it would come on at a certain temp and keep the entire room from getting lethally hot. I wanted to do that for my mouse room ( when the a/c goes out as it does now and then), but haven't done it so far.

Hope you can get some help (compensation) from the manufacturer, and figure a way to avoid it in the future.

Good luck!

wow that suck, i cant imagine how u felt. i lost my 2 snakes and i was crying for 1 1/2 days. im sory it happened. is it possible to bring NC to court so they can by all the snakes that you had in stock/ and expecting :grin01: or u think its not worth the time?

Thanks to all you. I really appreciate the kind words and suggestions.

After some reflection, I have decided not to request any compensation from the dealer. I do intend to reflect the finicial loss in my income taxes next year.

Also, I have decided to wire in two thermostats (of a different brand of course). The first will close the circuit to the heater (turn it on) when the temperature in the snake room drops below the desired level. In between that thermostat and the heater I will place the second thermostat which will open the circuit to the heater (turn if off) if the temperature gets too high. Therefore BOTH thermostats would have to fail for this disaster to happen again.

I decided against an exhaust fan because the snake room is well insulated and snake proof (to keep the little critters from escaping). Adding the fan would compromise both of these features.

Thanks again everyone.

P.S. If you are at the Raleigh show on Saturday afternoon, say "hey" to me I am real easy to recognize, even without the red suit. :santa:

LOL Santa, I'll be there from 9 am til after Kathy's seminar at 3, I'll be looking for a jolly old fellow! :wavey:

So, I'm guessing a 'cookie's and milk' belly, bushy white beard and twinkley eyes? -hehehe
I'm so sorry to hear about your females. I'd be so beside myself. I only have 2 females producing this year and they're treated like princess'! -I've had one since before her first shed and I'd cry for days if I lost her.

I am sorry to hear about your loss! Nothing can replace those snakes that you lost, but I hope you won't walk away from the hobby. Get some new hatchlings and rediscover the joy of these wonderful creatures!

Santa:
Pm me. I might have some extra hatchlings in a month or two I'd normally release in Jasper.
