Transferred to Larger Tank (baby corn)

My baby corn snake has been doing a lot of roaming around, climbing, and recently exploring the gap between the tank and the lid. I figured since my snake is so active and is growing at a good pace, I might as well put Fluffy in it's forever home, a 40 gallon breeder tank. I have a bunch of branches, a rock hide, like the kind that magnetizes itself to the side of the tank so you can remove half of it and see the snake curled up inside, and a small water dish.

The rock hide is in the middle of the tank. I have a lamp with a regular household bulb in it on one side of the tank. The tank sits in front of a large corner window so I don't think I'll need any more heat sources since the sun should do a pretty good job keeping the tank warm. With no heat source on the tank at all it stays around 78 degrees without the sun on it.

The branches in the tank span the entire length of the tank and form a sort of jungle gym with silk plants wrapped around the branches but still leaving the floor of the tank completely free and open. I had repti bark in the ten gallon that Fluffy was in before so I put that in a fourth of the tank, off to one side and I put new aspen bedding in the rest of the 3/4 of the tank.

My thoughts on what I should probably do would be to add two more hides, one for each side of the tank, and put a larger water dish in the tank. Right now the water dish sits in the middle of the tank and is the size of those feeding dishes you see in a hamster cage.

The only problem I'm having with the tank, though, is that the lid does not stay very secure and I've got four clips on it. I put two clips in the corner where the branches are closest to the top. I put one clip on the other side and another clip on one of the front corners. I feel like I might have to add two more clips. For now I just put a couple of five pound weights on two of the corners of the tank. Does anyone else have the problem of the clips not holding the lid down tight enough?

I'm hoping that this new set up will be a happy home for Fluffy but I want to make sure I'm giving my snake the best possible care so if any one has any tips/suggestions for how to make my snake have the happiest and healthiest life possible, please do share.

Sounds pretty cool! Post some pics! I really don't have the issue with the lid locks. But I made sure my guy couldn't escape either by using the sticky double sided velcro. I just cut them in to rectangular strips & attached one piece to the lid & the other to the tank. Maybe that could help? Its pretty cheap & secures the lid to my 40 gal breeder nicely! I gotta add more stuff in to my tank too!

YIKES! Okay... well this REALLY worries me... You should never ever put a glass viv in front of a window to start... glass magnifies heat drastically, the greenhouse effect, even with a ventilated top and I would be VERY cautious about cooking your snake. Same goes with household bulbs, they get VERY warm. THe other concern being that snakes, for the most part, need BELLY heat to digest properly, which is why under tank heating is recommended.

Wholeheartedly agree on this :) Defenitely a couple more hides, this will allow her to choose what temperature she needs to be at comfortably and not stay in a spot that isn't ideal because it's the only place she can hide.

I can't comment on clips I don't use them on any of my tanks just weights... I've heard enough horror stories about clips to not trust them completely!

WOuld love to see some pics :)

Thanks so much for the comments. I'll post some pics later today after I look up how to do that exactly. Well, I have very thick wooden slat blinds that I keep closed most of the time because my 65 gallon fish tank also sits directly in front of the same window perpendicular to the snake tank and I can't risk the fish tank going above 80 degrees since it's supposed to be a cold water tank.

As far as my snake needing belly heat to digest... I just fed my snake earlier yesterday afternoon after putting it in the new tank. I noticed that Fluffy was hiding under the aspen after consuming the pinky but when I came home this morning Fluffy was hanging out in the branches, like usual. My snake actually doesn't spend much time on the ground and prefers to hang out in the branches. The air temp in the tank is around 78. Winter is coming up so I think getting an under tank heater might be a good idea. I don't really like the lamp and I think Fluffy would prefer natural lighting anyway as it seems that my snake doesn't like the light being on so much.

As far as the tank getting cooked in front of the window... well, my fish tank, which is home to some very temperature sensitive fish, has never gone above 82 degrees even with prolonged direct sunlight exposure so I don't think I need to worry about the snake viv over heating. That's just my non-expert thought on that, though.

Thanks again for the comments!
