Transferring hatchlings to a bigger viv

Hi everyone,

I hope this isn't a silly question but I recently bought my first corn and feel like a new mother worrying about every little thing.

Rafe is currently housed inside a small tank inside a 2ft viv. I was advised by the breeder to keep him in this tank for around 3 - 4 weeks to allow him to get used to his new surroundings. However one friend of mine suggested this should be around 10 weeks and another said he should be fine to be housed in the viv once it's fully kitted out and escape proof and it's more to do with the size of the snake rather than the amount of time.

He's currently 17" with no feeding problems but I don't wish to cause him any excessive or unnecessary stress.

I got my corn in July. She was a hatchling when I got her. She was in a small plastic box. I put her in a 10 gal viv within 2 days. Fed her the 3rd day I had her. I have never had a problem with any aspect of her care. I don't understand the 10 week thing. A week to 10 days is plenty for a snake to adapt to new surroundings and feel secure. I want to make sure I understand what you are saying. The sanke is in a small holding tank INSIDE another 2 ft viv? Is that correct? When you say " 2 ft viv, " what dimension is the 2 ft? Height, length, or width? If there is nothing else in the viv, I see no reason to keep your snake in a tank inside another tank. Sorry, but this makes no sense to me.

If the 2ft viv is a standard 10gal tank then there should be wire mesh lids that fit down over it. There are also clips to hold the lid down snug or you can use any number of things to hold it down more effectively.
Typically, hatchlings can live in a 10gal for about a year but should then be moved up to a larger home. A 20gallon long will work through adulthood but you can always go bigger if you prefer.
A younger snake in a large viv with lots of open space can get stressed. If you supply lots of hides then there shouldn't be a problem with a large viv, but again the 10gal should be suitable for a while longer.

Like I said before I have the same set-up as you and trust me I would love to put my hatchling into the big viv and I know she would have no problems and this is what I was told when I bought her. The reason she is not in the big tank is because a determined hatchling could easily get through those two sheets of glass. For this reason the man at the reptile shop highly reccomended I kept it in geo boxes until it got a bit larger.
