An obsolete oldie...
Well, I'm sure it's happened to some of you out there, but I'd be interested in knowing how many. I had an exceptionally rare occurance at my house on the first of August! A TRIPLE CLUTCH!!!
This was from my beautiful lavender girl, Kette. The first clutch was 16 eggs, 14 good, second clutch was 13 eggs, 12 were good. This was with no reintroduction?!?!? After the second clutch, she was recovering well and I was treating her with rat pups for food. One week I ran out of the rat pups I was feeding her and went back to mice. No dice, a refusal. This was not her personality but I thought perhaps I had spoiled her with the rats. So I tried mice for the next 4 feeds but nothing, I caved and went out to buy her a rat pup and she ate that one right away. I thought, BINGO! Problem solved and went about my merry way.
I was pleased with how well this girl had recovered from the egg laying, being fast, muscular and energetic while handling. I had removed her moist nest box/hide box a week or two ago for disinifecting and not put it back yet. I came to feed last night, I open the container and SURPRISE!!! Five very good, healthy, plump white eggs and three slugs!
I just can't believe the luck in this case! The eggs had just been laid so they weren't damaged at all from no nest box. All eggs had been sucessfully laid, a relief that there was not any egg binding, as there easily could have been in a situation such as this! I also handled Kette as soon as I dealt with the eggs and she seems like her regular self, unbelievable! I offered her a small hopper and she gobbled it right down, then went to rest in her dry hide.
I just couldn't be more pleased with this special, special girl! I hope she knows how grateful I am. I've gotta get my nice big excersize/display cage built in the next few months and make sure she's the very first one to use it!
