Tub size for mice/rats

What size tubs do you use in your rodent racks?

I am currently using 12qt(about 10wx18lx6h) for a 1:2 colonies.

I am considering raising rats. What size should a 1:2 rat colony be housed in?

I've read some people house rats in a 10 gallon aquarium. The floor space is almost the same as the tubs I use for mice, but seems small for rats. I've also seen a 20qt which is the same floor space as the 12qt just 3" taller. If this would be large enough it would fit in my homemade rack, so that would be easy for me to setup.

I don't breed rats any more but when I did I used the black cement mixing tubs that are about 18" x 12" x 6". I build a 10 tub rack to slide the tubs in and out more easily. I usually kept them in 1:4 or 5 colonies. I did that for a couple years and it worked out well. Hope that helps.

I breed rats. I kept a 1:2 colony in a 10 gallon. They actually did quite well in it, but weren't together for long.

My one female came to me pregnant, so I got another 10 gallon for her to raise her babies in. Once the other female got pregnant I got another 10 gallon for her. I've heard of people keeping females with babies together, but it also poses problems such as them stealing each others babies.

I now have one female who had a litter of 11, but I euthanized 5 of them at pinky size. I'm seperating them tomorrow before the mom goes nuts! Another female with a litter of 10 and a male to rebreed the first female. They are very easy to care for and make wonderful pets. I love my ratties. :) If you have any other questions I'd be happy to help.
