Tubs

Ok so I am working on my decision of what morph corn I want to get, and I am also trying to decide whether I want to put the corn in an aquarium with a heat pad or a tub with a heat pad. I use a rack for my leopard geckos, and really like how a rack works. I have read how easily these guys can escape from their enclosure and that worries me. Is there some way that people secure the lids on the tubs other than how the lid is made?

i don't use lids on my rack at all. they are just a huge hassle, and to me, defeat the purpose of having a rack. i like being able to slide the tub out, spot clean, check the waters fresh, take the snake in or out for feeding, etc. the lids are pointless.

you just need to make sure that the snake can't escape between the rack and the tub, we use about 1mm of clearance/ventilation room between the top of the tub, and the shelf of the rack.

My sterilites' lids stay on well enough to keep my snakes in so far, and I've only had one escape from them.. But I think I must've left the lid un-clicked on one end, because it was a kinked up hatchling (aka my weakest snake). I've been using the 6 and 16 quart Sterilites available at $1 and $3 apiece at Big Lots.

I think people also use binder clips and small c-clamps to secure lids. I've only tried the c-clamp thing once; I moved my largest (and strongest... and meanest...) snake in to a temporary tub enclosure and added 4 c-clamps (two on either side not secured by the lid's built-in mechanism) to prevent an escape.

You could also just skip a step and get a full-blown rack for corn snakes NOW... Then you don't have the fuss and muss of dealing with it when you've become a full-blown Corn addict later on! ;)

Ahaha... I thought he meant securing tub lids outside of a rack system... Oh well.

Definitely agreed with Katia, if you meant in a rack. (Though I think more ventilation than the crack between the tub and rack shelf, in the form of drilled/soldered ventilation holes, is a good idea...) =)

I have mine in racks but they are young corns and are in 15q tubs, the rack will hold up to 31q. The 15q's because they are smaller than what the hole was meant for all have lids. When we eventually get up to a 31q then the tub will fit in the hole perfectly without any lids. I also have four binder clips on each tub as well because I am just way too nervous to lose one these guys. It's some work opening and closing the tubs but I am okay with it. I did start with a 10g aquariums with the sliding and locking lids and I really liked those but I found that I was running out of room to house the amount of snakes that I wanted to have, so I then switched to two racks.

Well I built my gecko rack so that I could keep my lids on the tubs. I know thats not how most people do it but I just feel more comfortable that way. I played around with my tubs the other night though and if I lift a little on the sides of the tub lid it just feels like one would be able to squeeze its way out. For now I am going to use an aquarium with a screen top and get the locking clips for it. I do love the racks though for the space reasons. I cant wait for my little guy to arrive. Should be here on Thursday. My Sunglow Motley male.
