Turning a 10g Fish tank to use for corn snake?

Hey everyone I have a spare 10g tank standard size, I was wondering what kind of screen cover I should get.
Thanks

you can get just a standard metal screen top, and clamps to go on the sides. Most pet stores carry the 10gal screen tops, but take measurements to the store and im sure it should work.

if you have time to wait for one i know you can order them for super cheap but 10 bucks is about what you pay at the pet store :p

and these are the clamps though i know they come in different styles.

http://www.petco.com/product/4353/PETCO-Reptile-Screen-Cover-Security-Clips.aspx

which are again like 2 dollars lol

hope that helped!

(i use the exact same setup on my baby black rat snake right now :)

Careful though, Corns can escape those rather easily.
Years ago my uncle had that set up with bricks on all 4 corners & the Corn escaped.
Was recaptured and the bricks were taped down with packing tape...escaped again.
Was never found after that.

oh man ;-;

Ive never had an escapee, but i know it is possible, in that case you could always do the sliding tops. I use those on all my other snakes (though i like to put mine on display around my house) and ive never had issues, because its a seal all the way around the cage. But in that case you would have to buy a whole new viv and those can get a little spensive once you go past a 10gal ): ALSO! call your local rescue center, the place around here in Bmore has a lot of things for sale that you can get from them as well as help out your local rescue place :) though i cant go in the rescue without wanting to snag all their kings and corns! lol

My handsome hubby built escape proof lids for my aquarium vivs. If you're handy (or have a friend who is) you can use hot glue, tomato stakes and screen. The lids fit snugly on the tops of the tanks and are 100% escape proof if you use metal mesh. I did have one girl force her way through the nylon mesh. Let me know if you want more info on building them.

Thanks everyone, I might one of those Exo-terra sreecn tops or go to my lfs and get one. I was wondering but do corn snakes smell? if they do is it a lot?

So why are you depriving yourself? You don't have to take them *all*, you could just take one or two... And the adoption fees are even reduced this month! Think of the savings! :dgrin:

(Because I can't take them all home myself, that's why!)

But srsly, it looks like you'll be starting a few other local types on The Habit later this year. Feel free to send them our way when they realize they need more than just one! And thanks for mentioning rescues. I think a lot of people don't know about them, and they're really a pretty awesome thing to have around.

Out of curiosity, are you a MICA student?

Yep! I just graduated this year and moved up to huntvalley for work.

I got a 4th snake already and im trying to convince my bf of letting me bring more home! As soon as i do, i know im gonna go quickly for a striped king or some other cream and chocolate colored king. I love snakes (and my bf is learning to love them too :) )

The rescue here in bmore has a lot of those reps saved from that reptile mill that was raided a while back ): so they have a lot of babies of all types that are looking for a new home and I try as hard as i can to get word out to new herp lovers and owners, even if it is just to get supplies from the rescue (anything helps!). Before I buy any snake i've always checked out reptile rescues, and even my cats and dogs, i've always gotten from rescues. Animals that know you love them and really appreciate the love always make the best pets :)

also, when ever i get started on my barn cage project ill be sure to take pics and send em along :D

Whoops missed out on this comment,

My snakes only smell right after some one has pooped, and even then you have to go up to the cage to smell it. Part of the reason i love snakes is they pretty much dont smell like anything but woodchips and other wood like things (logs and moss lol)

I have screen tops on all my vivs.

:p (though their setup has changed a little bit in the past few months.)

I would love info...& pics...please :)

Corn snakes really don't smell unless you're near a fresh scat ;). But if you're wondering if their cage smells...not really, unless you don't clean it for awhile. Rodents smell far worse, we'll put it that way ;)

They have these screen tops at Walmart that clip into the lip of the tank that I hear work really well, though I have never personally used them. They only cost 8 bucks each.

Hmm, whats the best way to clean out the old fish tank?

I would use diluted bleach in warm water, then rinse really really well. I would refrain from using soaps for fear they would leave toxins behind and kill whatever you put inside afterwards.

You are absolutely right!! I had pet mice for years in my classroom. I miss their cute little faces, but I definitely don't miss cleaning them every time I turn around and their tanks stinking anyway!

I would love info...& pics...please :)
Sorry for the delay. I haven't been able to keep up the past couple of days. :eek1:

Here are some photos. Dan (my husband) says the secret here is to make sure the tomato stakes are measured so that the whole lid fits precisely to the tank in question. He cuts the wood with a hack saw (for metal) because it has very fine teeth, a thin blade and permits a really smooth cut.

This particular lid is on a 10-gal tank in our bedroom. Dan has made them with nylon mesh and with metal. If you have a cat or a determined escape artist of a snake you'll want to get really heavy screen. A 10-gal tank can be done with 2 tomato stakes. The nails are 1.25-inch finishing nails. The glue is all done with a hot glue gun.

I've included view of the top, corners, and inside of the lid. Hopefully you can see from the photos how it is put together. If not, PM me and I'll get Dan to spell out directions for both of us.

And here's a last photo of the lid in its proper place, keeping a snake where she belongs! I have these lids on quite a few vivs. You can always paint the wood if you'd prefer a different look. Hope this is useful for someone. They really do work well and they cost almost no money - just a bit of time. :dancer:

Oh yes - these can also be done entirely with hot glue, omitting the nails. I didn't take any pics of this version but they look the same except of course without the nails.
