Two dollar pinks!!

All I have to say is wow. I went to Petsmart to pick up some f/t pinky mice and they came out to like 11.60 with tax. Pretty much 2 bucks a pinky. I only have one snake so breeding mice really wouldnt be too practical. I mean I only buy them maybe once a month, but man do they turn a mean profit. I would think they order in huge bulk for maybe .12 or .15 each and jack the price up to a crazy amount. Just a rant, I feel a little bit better now :santa:

You can order from places like Big Cheese and have several months of snake food in your freezer for much less money:

I was thinking about that, then I calculated shipping and thought about if I ordered the minimum i think 50 or 100 not sure, that would be a year worth of pinkies, my snake would probably be on to another size by then, or the mice would probably get freezer burn sitting in the freezer for a year. I have a solution...maybe more snakes lol. Or if there was a expo near NYC

Do you have anyone near you that also has snakes that you could share an order with? You might also look for a local herp society. You can usually find members there that raise their own feeders. If you do order in bulk, order pinks AND fuzzies, so you'll be ready when he moves up in size. You can separate them into smaller groups and buy a cheap food sealer to keep them from getting freezer burn, but I can honestly tell you that even with a little burn, mine don't seem to mind. ;)

Our local pet store sells mice for $2 each regardless of size too... at that rate, it'd be worth buying a male/female and freezing the pinks. With just one snake it's almost not worth buying in bulk because they don't go through too many before they need the next size... or you could always add more snakes and make it worth buying bulk! lol

More snakes is certainly the solution!! But if not the white plains show isnt far at all from NYC. Lots of frozen rodents there!

I vote more snakes too. Or even more sankes :)

Where did you get your snake? I got mine from a local breeder and she raised her own mice. She sold 40 "pinks" (in quotes because it was about half pinks, 1/4 small fuzzies, 1/4 fuzzies) to me at .50 each. Not as nice as I could get at a show or (god forbid) raising them myself, but I made out pretty nice. That's enough mice between the two snakes for several months, and by then they'll be ready for another size.

Also I read somewhere that frozen meeses keep for up to 2 years without freezerburn, if stored correctly. But since I can't cite that, take with a grain of salt.

I've always ordered from Big Cheese, minimum is 50. I just recently got a second snake, I've had my first snake for 2 years. In other words it's not a problem buying mice for one snake. Yes they outgrow the size before you're out but then you just feed them more than one, no big deal. I end up ordering about every 6 months, the mice keep just fine for that long in the freezer.

wow, i paid $5 for 4 months supply from the breeder when i bought Sonja.

looks like i'll go back to her to buy more when i need to!!

Just to let people know Big Cheese Rodent vacuum packs there rodents so they last a long time. I buy like 50 large pinkies, 50 Fuzzy, 50 hoppers and that will last me over a year. When I open a bag of mice I put it in a freezer zip lock bag to stop freezer burn. And yes the snake does out grow the pinkies before they are finished but all I do is start feeding 2 and 3 pinkies at a time. the same goes for the fuzzy and hoppers.

How many did you get?

16 (one a week), Lee said she would eat them for the next 3-4 months.

i'm not looking to make her grow big/fast, just want her to be healthy.

she fed them every Sunday, so i figured to just keep it that way.

aww, she sold them cheaper to you than me lol

Our local shop sells pinks for $.70 and fuzzies for $.80; small rats for $3.00 and up a dollar for each size. Not as bad as $2.00 a pink, but after checking out these feeder companies; it seems a little steep.

I got my snake shipped to me from VMS herp. I think the best solution looks like finding a local herp club and seeing if someone breeds mice. Maybe its me but I dont see a lot of people from NY here. Seems like most snake people are in warmer climates Florida, Arizona, etc

oooohh, dont say anything to her then please!!! LOL

i didnt think to ask her if she sold other sizes as well, it would be worth the drive for me.

might be getting another corn too...not sure yet. would need to get another viv.

I sell pinks for .79 cents, or 10 for $5 at my pet shop. FWIW, .12 to .15 cents is not a real cost when you factor in shipping. Then there is the fish bag you put them in, your time (small though it may be), and overhead such as rent, electric, and incalculable costs... such as the time an employee left the freezer door ajar and I had to throw away almost $1000 in rodents and frozen fish and dog food.

At .70 cents a pink, I promise they aren't getting over on you! Now two bucks, that's another matter.

I just bought a sterilite box, think it's ~10g. I got it at walgreens. Drill holes in it for air and ventilation.
