I'm finally getting around to introducing myself and my son...

First of all, thanks to Rich for the great forum and all the members who have contributed. When my son decided he wanted to delve into the world of snakes, this forum played an integral role in educating us both before we added his boy to the family as well as each day since. It is much appreciated!

As for me, I'm in my mid 30's and have always been an animal lover. Although my parents weren't especially supportive of my unusual choices in pets (with one exception, I did have an Ameiva aka Rainbow Racerunner as a kid), I'm making up for it as an adult. Besides my current beasties which are a couple of cats, two ferrets and a Shire (horse), in the past either I or my son have had an iguana, a rose hair tarantula, a giant African millipede, rats, mice, a hamster, hermit crabs, a pug and a german shepard. I also used to have a ball python (poor El Guapo had since crossed the bridge). Job wise, I'm a Senior Solutions Architecture Consultant for Dell so I'm endlessly glued to computers but I do get to bounce around the country on occasion.

My son (screen name is Brandon_in_NY) just turned 13 and "Legs Diamond" is his first snake. Brandon is already so smitten with him, I know Legs won't be his last snake either. Legs was born on August 22nd and we just got him on Saturday, the 4th. The breeder states he is a sunglow (I'm not so sure yet...we'll have to wait till he's more mature to be sure I think) and besides an incident with his tail tip (incomplete shed the breeder didn't catch killed the tip), he's very healthy, quite docile for such a little one and definitely a hearty eater!

With the addition of Legs to the family, my interest in snakes was reawakened and oddly, I found that, unlike in the past, I'm more taken with corns versus the boas and pythons now. I'm already itching *badly* to get my own corn and to be honest, the only reason I haven't ordered the phantom I'm in love with is because I don't have a good second viv at the moment. I'm already brainstorming how I want to build a muti-viv wall unit "show case" to house at least 4 corns (maybe 6  ). It'll definitely be built by the spring though so we'll be ready to welcome home some new babies next year...if I can wait that long . Already on the corn "wish list" is a cinnamon for my son and a phantom and lavender motley for myself :D !

Anyway, I've written a book so I won't bore you all any longer, lol. Hopefully, I can correctly post some pics to follow. I look forward to getting to everyone!

Welcome to you both!!! I love the horse and the ferrets!!! Of course the corn snake too! Look forward to spending lots of time on the forum with you both!

Welcome! Great bunch of pets you have there. I've always wanted a ferret, but my wife insists it will stink too bad. :/ I've got one little snow girl myself, but am wanting more!

I'm also in the planning stages of building a multi-viv wall unit show-case. I've got the basics planned as as to size and what materials I want to use that will be both elegant and long lasting. I intend to create a DIY when I get started, and post the progress as I go. I'd love to hear how you are going to approach your wall unit! Perhaps we can compare notes. I'm also creating my own fake rocks, but now I'm rambling..

Again, I welcome you and your son to the forums!

What a sweet introduction, and great pictures!

You will love it here--the people are great, and, as far as I can tell, collectively, they know ALL about corns. :D

Love the ferrets...we have four of our own and they are one of our greatest joys. Such little troublemakers! :)

Welcome to the forum. You won't stop at 4 or 6.. Lol believe me. I told myself I was stopping at 5. Well I am already working on how to get my next 7 I picked out. Hopefully I will stop there. But who knows.

Hi Rebecca and Brandon!

Your story sounds very much like mine, only it was my daughters and I. I too have a Legs - only her name is Leggs McGee - she's a 4 year old Mexican Black King.

Pretty snake, horse and very handsome son!!

Enjoy!

-Tonya

Thank you all for such a warm welcome and kind words. This is by far the friendliest on-line ‘community’ I have ever visited or been a part of.

Saulace,it sounds like you and I have the exact same vision for a viv show-case. I’ve actually got fairly decent wood working and construction skills so I’m set there and I’ve already decided I’ll be hard mounting full power strips along with an uninterruptable power supply with build in surge suppressors. I’m also thinking recessed lighting for red night time viewing bulbs, just not sure if I can find them small enough. My biggest hold-up right now is finding a location for it (I can’t put it where I want it, long story :uhoh:) which is keeping me from figuring the potential capacity and measurements. My next hurdle is figuring out the actual enclosure material (acrylic maybe?) and still maintaining easy access with decent ventilation. If you have any thoughts, I’d love to hear them. Oh, and I saw in the DIY forum the thread for creating your own rock caves and backdrops using the insulating foam spray and I immediately knew that’s what I wanted to do. On another note, it’s too bad I just left Texas a month ago, Lenny and Squiggy (my ferrets) had flown down with me when I was doing some work in Round Rock. I could have introduced your wife to the wacky world of ferrets and she could have experienced them for herself. It is true that although the scent glands are typically removed when they are altered, they still do have a slight musky scent but most people don’t even notice it and some are even quite fond of it. If there is an issue with odors, it’s typically due to poor husbandry, i.e. not cleaning the litter box daily or not cleaning the cage and washing their bedding weekly. Chances are she’d fall in love with them (most people can’t resist)!

And yes, Tess…isn’t it amazing how they can be so mischievous yet they never fail to make you smile and laugh (even when one never fails to somehow seek out your coffee cup and dump it out each and every time, inevitably causing collateral damage)? I find myself talking to Lenny, who is 100% deaf, and he'll just look up at me with this look as if to say "You really are a blonde " before running off to play, lol, little buggers!

Many thanks for my nomination for best intro, lol…I figured my novella would scare most people away! :sidestep:

Thanks again everyone, your welcomes are all very much appreciated!

I would have loved to have met your ferrets, and I'm sure my wife would have fallen for them. Someday I'll win her over! (I mean, I was finally able to convince her to let me get a snake!)

Here's a quick rundown for my viv idea. I also intend to use the spray foam DIY for the interior rocks.

4x25 gallon tanks (4 snakes)
Maple wood for frame
Lexan (non-warping) plexiglass
openings: hinged at bottom front so each tank's viewing panel opens down
3" lip in front so substrate doesn't spill out
Use 1/4" peg board on back for ventilation (or a clear sheet of pegged plastic if I can find it)
Top of the highest tank will be 6'. Bottom of lowest tank will be 2'10" off ground. Storage compartments will be placed in the bottom 2'10"
Each tank will be about 1'6" tall and about 2'6" long, 1'6" wide, with a 2" gap in between the tank stacks. (Two columns of two tanks)
lighting w/ automatic timer
individual thermostat heating and thermometers hidden in storage compartment underneath

WELCOME! great opening(which I never did when started on the forum, kinda sorta missed the intro page..lol)
LOVE LOVE LOVE the pic of your horse. Hope you find your way around here with little problem and if you DO need help you will find no other place better.
