under tank heater

I recently bought an under the tank heater but have not used it yet because according to the instructions there is a possible chance of it breaking the glass should I keep it or return it to the store?

Firstly, raise the tank slightly off the mat so that it doesn't rest directly on it. That prevents the weight of the tank damaging the mat. It also allows airflow over the surface of the mat, which helps prevent overheating.

Most importantly, buy a thermostat. This will regulate the mat's temperature so that it never reaches the danger point where it would get hot enough to break the glass (which would probably be hot enough to kill your Corn anyway).

Plenty of people here use mats with glass tanks - I suspect the place that sold it to you just didn't give you the full info on how to use it. All should be well.

How would you recommend raising it off the mat, exactly? I'm trying to picture it mentally and well... I can't.... :awcrap:

If you bought a Zoo med UTH it usually comes with this little pack of stickie bump lifters..you stick them on each corner of the edges of the tank to raise the tank a bit..but I also know people who stick them to the heat mat so just that part is lifted a little..

Even if you didn't buy a zoo med..you can buy the bumpie lifters at home depot or even wal-mart for like 1 to 2 dollars..

thanks

Thank you Bitsy and every one with the advice about the heater. Yes I did get a zoo-med. I have the vive sitting on a wood work bench should I raise it by placing cement or stone bricks? Thank you again reptbilly

Bricks would certainly work, but might be overkill. An air gap of just half an inch should be more than adequate.
These are the feet that came with my UTH. Anything similar would work perfectly.
