unsocial corn

hi guys i have a question about my corn, what sort of behaviour is normal for a corn about to shed, he is 3/4 yrs old and ihe hasnt shed since ive has him which isnt very long, reading previous posts i have read about the eyes going frosty and the hiding, but at the moment he seems really peed off, i just opened the viv door and i heared him vibrate his tail so i touched him and he pulled right away and vibrated his tail again so i left him alone, i am just hopeing it is cause he's about to shed and not cause he's unhappy, its like he just wants to be left alone.

Yes- snakes do NOT like to be bothered when they are blue. Even the most gentle-natured snakes can get crabby. This is perfectly normal. That's what the tail rattle means- don't bother me.

He sounds like he might be in shedding mode if so they do hide alot and they do very little movement. And how long have you had him for? because he just might be also trying to just get use to his new home and trying to get the stress down. But when they go into shedding the eyes will change like this morning I was changing the water bowels and I go to pick up one of my corn snakes and I saw his eyes have change color. So maybe later on or tomorrow check and see if his eyes have change color. :)

And yes Nanci is right when they are blue they don't like to mess with and they will let you know lol.

i have only had him about a week mabe its to soon to be handling him then, i have had him out a few times and he has seemed fine but the last two days hes been really crabby but the yesterday when i actualy managed to get him out his scales felt a bit different to the other times i have held him which is what made me think shed so i did a bit of reserch and thought i would ask the question. i might just leave him alone for a week let him shed or get used to the new surroundings, one more quick question are you ment to feed them as normal when coming up to a shed or do you leave off untill done.
thank you both for the very quick replies.

I got two corn snakes in October. Carmine shed for me two weeks ago, and Rufus is getting ready to any day now. Carmine is always a very sweet snake, but she was definitely crabby while she was "in blue". Rufus always had attitude anyway, and he is REALLY crabby now. He has been hiding in his paper towel tube for the past 3 days, without moving, so I decided to check in on him today. He was not amused. He rattled his little tail at me and coiled up in the tube. I just wanted to make sure he was alive, so I gently put him back, lol.

Also, you should probably wait to feed your little guy. Being that he's new, and possibly in blue, you don't want a stress regurge.

You should not feed them until the shed is all done with because they can regurgitate the meal and that is not what you want plus that is really hard on the snake to do that. So yeah I wait until he is done shedding then feed him. :)

I would wait to feed. My hatchling regurged when I fed him a couple days before he went blue (his eyes were still clear enough I couldn't tell he was in blue. Hard to tell with a new snake you haven't learned yet, but if he doesn't usually rattle and he is now that he's in blue, he's probably feeling all weird and defensive because of the impending shed, and that would indicate to me that he wouldn't feed well during blue either. As Nanci and other experience and knowledgeable folk told me, there's no harm in waiting for shed (if he is in fact blue, wait a couple days and see), but there can be harm in feeding during shed, so why risk it.

He may not be in shed. I have one that's almost two now and ALWAYS rattles as soon as I walk into the room. Two of my babies always do it too. If you don't see his color getting dull (you'll start to notice it even a week before blue once you know him) then he's probably not in shed.

well hes not due a feed for a couple of days i will just try and watch him closely and see if there are anymore signs show of shed, but again getting up this morning he is still in his hide not moved he normally comes out to investigate when i change his water, the last owner who had before me couldnt remeber when he last shed cause if i new that i would be able to estimate if it is coming up or not.
many thanks guys on your advice i will let you know in a couple of days how he is.

Well its been a couple of days and its feed day tomorrow and it dont appear that he is about to shed i think he was just stressed with the move etc as he is now coming out of the hide and having a good wonder about, he had a little rattle at me earlier but once he knew i wasnt there to hurt him he settle right down, i got him out and we watch a bit of tv together and now hes back i his hide lol but he seems all good. thank you for all your help everyone youve all been great.

We have had ours about a month now. His eyes are now going blue. It was no problem when I went to pick him up. He was very calm once I had him out. He seemed not to be bothered. Very cool snake. I will keep an eye on him to see what his behavior is.

Don't attempt to handle for the first week or when they are shedding! The first week is very stressful and when they are shedding, they cannot see and are aggressive and easy to stress
