Update on Markey

Markey

New member
Hi everyone! I took Markey to a second vet to have a recheck done on her. The first vet told me to keep her temps at 78-80 while recovering. She said that Markey (four years old) weighed 256 grams. She also gave me Baytril for Markey for a possible upper respiratory infection. She didn't hear anything that alarmed her but I saw drainage so she medicated her. She also told me to soak Markey one to two times per day because she was full of stool.
After posting at a few forums, I started to feel like the lady didn't lead me in the right direction.

When I took Markey back the second time, I went to another vet. I was immediately impressed with them after speaking to them on the phone so I figured it was worth a visit.
Markey was weighed in at 978 grams. When the vet walked in she said, "I was expecting to see a tiny little snake based on what her recorded weight was." I knew she weighed more than 256 grams.....sheesh! Anyway, the vet checked Markey over from head to toe and said that she doesn't have ANY stool in her body. They were so impressed with Markey's appearance, color, etc....I teased that Markey has her Mother's hips...lol

The vet was not concerned that Markey hasn't eaten in six weeks. She told me to be patient and thought that trying a smaller food item (fuzzy size) was a good idea.

She felt that the waterproof background would be a good idea for the mesh cage, too. This will help to hold humidity, temps, etc....although my temps are staying very constant.

She did not recommend the probiotics so I didn't pursue it.

Also, Markey got sexed.....she's definitely a girl!!!!

I think that's about it. I came home with lots of interesting papers on Corns and also a form to sign up for our local herp club. I didn't even know there was such a thing in my area.

I have to call the clinic back if Markey hasn't eaten in three weeks or so.

Thanks to EVERYONE who read and/or replied to my posts. You really helped me to get through a rough period with Markey. We still aren't out of the woods yet, but I feel so much better knowing that Markey isn't full of stool and that she is ok healthwise.

The vet wasn't concerned about a 6 week fast? I'm really not claiming to know better, and it probably just sounds so long to us becasue we eat every day, but isn't that quite a long time even for a snake?

That's great you found a vet you feel happier about :)

If Markey has an RI and has been undergoing medication and so forth, the stress could be putting her off food. An adult snake can go some time without eating. Just keep at it and keep us updated. Good luck!
