Kiwi Chick
Hi
I have a 15 inch snow corn, ive had him for about a week. But i just lost him. I swear he was sitting tucked up i my hood and i walked down the hall into the kitchen and then checked for him and he was gone. Hes so tiny and theres so many tiny places for him to hide/go. Whats the best method for finding him? I'm scared ill never see the wee guy again.

Start with checking the last place you definitely know he was in. Check everywhere. Everywhere. Even extremely small spaces you wouldn't think he could get into. In between couches, under/in chairs, in desks, behind shelves, in closets, even in pillowcases (I actually had one escape and turned up inside one of the pillows ON MY BED. talk about stupidity). They can and will go just about anywhere. It may help you to pour some flour along the edges of the rooms, across doorways, places he may travel across. Also try getting a bunch of plastic grocery bags or something similar that will crinkle when you step on it or, more importantly, when the snake slithers across it. Try laying them everywhere in the last room you saw him. Also, do a search here on escaped corns. There's a lot of good information out there.

First of all, lock up the cat this second.
I've found a few missing hatchlings by leaving out heat blankets with a hide on them. I live in basement that can get chilly and it worked once. Other times I've found them by placing long shelf planks on the floor leaning along the wall and checking behind them every day. If he is missing for long try luring it out with a mouse in a cage, put it beside a hide on the floor.
Small corns are more inclined to climb and are often found on shelves, behind or between books or dvd. Make sure there are no air vents for it to go down. And don't give up for at least 3 weeks, they can live a long time with no food.
Also, those sticky pad mouse traps or fly paper can catch them pretty good but also can cause a good deal of stress so be careful and make sure you get a brand that is easy to unstick.
Good luck! keep us updated.

Thanks guys

well I stayed up a good deal last night but still no sign of him. We heat this old place with a woodstove so i dont think hed crawl into the heating ducts as they arent used. Because of this im figuring im most likely going to find him in the sitting room as thats where the wood stove is and so the warmest room in the house. Ive put out some boots and cardboard rolls plus his house in a shallow box with some aspen water and a blanket in a dark corner near the fire. I'm also going to put out some flour and one of the 2 liter bottle pinky trap things tonight. i didnt last night cos i didnt think hes be hungery enough. I have my cat confined to my room and the two dogs only in the house at night in another room. I live in montana and its very cold at the moment, very cold so they cant stay outside. Well thanks again ill try to keep you posted.

well....

well nobody seems to be intrested in talking to me any more. I still havent found hime yet, i get up every morning to look for him. The pinkie trap didnt work. Well i guess ill just keep on praying.

IMO, (from having snakies get out and finding them) they first search for somewhere confined before they worry about temps. their first instinct is to be safe in a tight place, then warmth comes second.

yeah, it sucks...

I know first hand. I had a brand new hatchling escape this year from the hovabator. I know how it feels to lose one. I looked high and low for a week and never did find him. On the other hand I have had a young adult escape on two separate occasions before I made alterations to my rack system. Both times she turned up a couple weeks later...In the darnedest places. My advice is to keep looking and not give up hope, but you might wanna start thinking about a replacement just in case. BTW, hoods are not a good place for hatchlings. I know of somebody else that lost one that way too. You gotta keep those little guys in plain sight, they can disappear in an instant if your not looking. Good luck! I hope you find your snake!

I have to tell you, several years ago, probably 4 or 5 now, I had gotten a baby corn. And it escaped, this was wayyyyy before i knew anything about this forum or I would have been on here asking for advice. Anyway, I didn't find him for over 3 months, and gave him up for dead. We had a roach problem in the lower apartments in my building and I had to empty all my kitchen cupboards and set everything to the side so they could spray. Well, later in the day that they sprayed, I started putting things away, and what did I find?, the baby i thought was long gone! I put him in his cage and he immediately drank like he had never drank before, the next day i fed him, and he ate awesome, but sadly within a couple weeks he did end up dying, I think he had been in the bags i stored under my sink, and they wre still in the kitchen at the time of the extermination, and I have a feeling the chemicals are what got him.

The moral to my story is, DON'T GIVE UP LOOKING!. Your baby could be ANYWHERE!

Have you tried any masking tape traps along the edges of your walls? Or leaving rattly paper around so you can hear him?
