Urgent Need Help

Jak the Snake

New member
The last two nights Jake has not been roaming his tank as usual. I got him 4 weeks ago and his is a year old and he has not shed for me yet. I have noticed that his colors have gotten dull and this started with his tail a couple weeks ago and now he has a dull shine all the way to his head. Last night he did not come out at all he just stayed in his hide. This morning he was in the same place and I took him out for a minute and he just did not move around as much. Is this what to expect when they are about to shed? I have not seen any change in the color of his eyes yet and if this is normal how long will it be before he is done. Also he ate 5 days ago just fine.

Any help would be appreciated.

It sure sounds like he is getting ready to shed. Just leave him alone and don't handle him (snakes don't like to be handled when ready to shed). His color will probably clear up soon and then he'll shed a couple of days later.

I personally still offer food when my guys are ready to shed. Sometimes they will not eat though. I'm sure that most here will advise against it, since if you feed in a different container you will have to handle the snake.

Usually they don't eat when their in shed, but after the skin comes off they get hungry. You could feed him, but it would probably be best not to have him digesting while he is getting ready to shed. :)

Go ahead and feed him. He'll either eat it or he won't. Each snake is different, and it does not matter in the slightest, whatever way he decides to go.

I agree with Darin. Go ahead and feed him. Most of my snakes eat when they're ready to shed (little pigs!) and I even watched one start it's shed while still swallowing dinner!

I also agree with Darin (and everyone else who agreed with Darin:p) They will either eat it or they won't. I offer it to mine, except for the ones I know turn it down EVERY time they are about to shed. I have never seen any ill effets from one eating while it is in blue phase.

In my experience though youhave to watch them if they are "blue". I fed my Anery when she was blue once. She struck at the mouse, but missed and latched on to herself.

Just be mindful of them when feeding at this stage.
